It was the 300th career victory for Indiana Coach Bobby Knight, whose Hoosiers have never lost in 16 games against Northwestern. The Wildcats scored the first two baskets of the game, but jumpers by Thomas and Ted Kitchel tied the game and Carter put the Hoosiers ahead to stay. Carter added four more and Indiana continued its scoring string to 16 straight points as the Wildcats went scoreless for nearly five minutes. The lead then dwindled to two before ,another eight-point burst helped Indiana to a 39-27 halftime lead. Guard Rod Roberson, who led Northwestern with 18 points, hit three straight baskets that closed the margin to six points early in the second half, but Indiana reeled off another 14 straight and coasted the rest of the way. Thomas, a freshman guard, had eight points and assisted Carter on another basket during that 4%-minute surge that widened the lead to 57-37. Indiana then built several leads of 21 points before Knight cleared the bench, and the Hoosiers' lead never dropped below 14 the rest of the game. Barry Carroll scored 21 points before fouling out with 4:17 left in the game as 12th-rated Purdue edged Minnesota 58- 56 to retain first place in the Big Ten basketball race. The Boilermakers survived a last minute comeback by the Gophers to climb to 8-3 in league play and 15-3 overall. A field goal by Drake Morris, who scored 17 points, gave Purdue a 56- 49 advantage with 1:20 remaining. MINNESOTA CUT its deficit to two points, 56-54, on a three-point play by freshman Randy Breuer. Breuer later missed the first shot of a bonus free throw opportunity with 15 seconds remaining that could have tied the game. Purdue, plagued by poor shooting from the foul line which kept the game close, took a 58-54 edge on a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining and Minnesota scored at the buzzer. Mark Hall was high for the Gophers, who fell to 6-5 in league play and 13-7 overall, with 14 points. Kevin McHale, Minnesota's leading scorer, had only nine points before fouling out with 7:19 to play. The Badgers, who had only four field goals in the second half, got the first of them with 9:20 remaining when Claude Gregory got a slam dunk to make the score 44-33. TheIllini stayed at least eight points ahead until 2:30 was left. Then they went into a stall, spreading out the Badger defense and forcing fouls that enabled them to pull away on the strength of free throws. Iowa 44, MSU 39 IOWA CITY - Steve Krafcisin scored 20 points, including six in overtime, to lead Iowa to a 44-39 victory ov Michigan State last night in a Big TeO matchup. MSU took the lead in the extra period, 35-34, on a tip-in by Ron Charles with 2:40 left but the Hawkeyes regained control. Krafcisin scored a field goal and Iowa guard Kenny Arnold stole the inbounds pass on the play, which resulted in a free throw by Kevin Boyle for a 37-35 Iowa lead. THE HAWKEYES, who improved their league mark to 6-5 and 150 overall, overcame slowdown tactics by the defending NCAA champion Spar- tans in the first half. Michigan State took only five shots in the opening period as. the Hawkeyes took an 8-6 lead at intermission. The tempo changed inthe second half and Iowa moved to a 29-23 lead with 6:20 remaining on a long jumper by guard Kenny Arnold.
