The Michigan Daily-Friday, February 1, 1980-Page 73-69 COMEBACK WIN Blue nips Badgers in OT aA ° Feb. 8 By ALAN FANGER special to the Daily MADISON-There's no need to bring out the respirator just yet-the cardiac kids are still playing with racing hear- ts, but for the time being, their pulses have stabilized. Indeed, as if nobody within sight or earshot of Big Ten basketball could believe that Michigan could play its *urth straight overtime game of the conference season. The Wolverines did exactly that last night, squeaking by Wisconsin, 73-69, before 7,850 stunned fans in Wisconsin Field House. AFTER THEY HAD stormed back from an eight-point deficit early in the second half and tied the game at 63-63 to end regulation play, the cages sprinted to a four-point advantage in the extra period, then held on to win with some clutch free throw shooting by Mark Lozier and Ike Person. "I sure feel better when I win them," said Wolverine coach Johnny Orr after the game. "These kids battle all the way." The win boosts Michigan's record to 4-5 in the Big Ten and 11-7 overall. The Wolverines now sport a 2-3 record in overtime contests, as they broke a two- game string of losses in post-regulation play. THIS GAME WAS unique in that the Wolverines grabbed the lead in over- time. Mike McGee and Thad Garner hit short shots to put Michigan ahead, 67- 63, then Wes Matthews popped a short shot through the twines to make it 67-65. 'As Keith Smith brought the ball downcourt, he was fouled by Badger guard Greg Dandridge. Smith made the pair of free throws, but the tables ap- peared to turn moments later, when forward Claude Gregory slammed a dunk through the hoop, and the Badgers intercepted the inbounds pass. Web Matthews drove in for an uncontested himself from hero into goat. The senior co-captain slapped Mathews on the hand as he was driving in for a layup. But even Matthews, a 90 per cent foul shooter and probable All-Big Ten selec- tion, couldn't compose himself under pressure. His free throw caromed off the outer rim, where Paul Heuerman had firmly -planted himself for the rebound. See more sports, pp. 10 & 12 Smith kept matters in suspense by missing the front end of a one-and-one with 27 seconds lelft, leaving the Badgers with at least a chance to tie the game and force a second overtime. THEY RAN THE clock down to the two-second mark before Gregory's jumper rolled off the rim. Person scooped the ball in a crowd, then was fouled by Keith Mitchell, The freshman forward then hit both of his free throws, thus icing the victory.
