The third period onslaught completed a Wolverine series sweep and sends the fourth-place Badgers reeling back to Madison with visions of fifth, maybe even sixth place in the WCHA. The game began innocuously enough with the two. teams battling to a scoreless tie through the first period. With the exception of two Wisconsin penalties, there was little to stir the 7,117 spectators gathered at Yost as numerous icing calls seems to provide the ony semblence of end to end action. The second period was also charac- terized by tight checking and good defensive play. Michigan emerged from the frame with a 2-1 lead on the power of center Dan Lerg's first two of his eventual four goals. At 4:06, with Badger defenseman Bruce Wallace off for hooking, Lerg took a pass from SPORTS '4 Matmen topple Hoosiers, after slow start, 29-1 0 By AL GRABENSTEIN The Michigan matmen increased their record to 6-1-1 last night at Crisler Arena, by toppling the University of Indiana 29-10. Pins by sophomore Mark Pearson and senior co-captain Steve Fraser along with an excellent performance by Larry Haughn paved the way to victory. However, at the outset the meet looked grim as Michigan's Tom Davids, wrestling at the 118-pound weight class, took a scorching loss from Indiana's Angelo Marino. Halfway through the third period of the 126-pound match Indiana's Mark Galyan, with an 8-0-0 record, came on strong, but the action ended with Michigan's Larry Haughn winging 12-9. In the 134-pound weight class Wolverine Bob Sair couldn't catch up to, Hoosier Keith Saunders' early lead and took a 7 to Sloss. The action stayed even at the 150-pound weight class until the end of the second period, when Hoosier Jerry Levine managed to escape the grasp of Wolverine John Beljan and take the lead. Beljan came back in the third, period to win 8-4. Wrestling at 158 pounds, Michigan's Memir Nadhir unrelentingly dominated against Indiana's Keven Weber, winning 11-4. Wolverine Bill Konovsky took on and beat Hoosier Scott Kelly in the 167-pound weight class, 9-2. In the 177-pound weight class, Michigan Bill Petoskey powered his way to an 18-7 win over Indiana's Mike DeAmbrose. In the upper weights, powerhouse Fraser, with a 13-2 lead, pinned In- diana's Allen Dabbiere in the 190-pound weight class. teammate John Blum at the right face off circle and drilled a slapshot along the ice and between the pad of Wiscon- sin goaltender Roy Schultz.' AFTER A BADGER power play goal by Ron Vincent at 9:14, Lerg tallied his second goal when freshman phenom Bruno Basesotto slid a pass across the slot that the senior center jammed into the open side of the net. It didn't take long for the game to tranform from a close-checking affair to a wide open scoring orgy. In the third period, the Badgers got on the board to tie the game at two all, only 1:01 into the period. Badger right wing Scott Lecy broke in alone on the left side and beat Blue goaltender Paul Fricker low to the stick side. The first rumblings of the impending earthquake began at 7:37 when Lerg notched his hattrick with a 25-foot blast that beat Schultz to the far side. Thirty seconds after Jon Morgan brought the Badgers within one, to 4-3, Wolverine freshman Ted Speers tucked the puck in the upper corner to quell the brief Badger resurgence. Lerg added his fourth goal at 14:08 on a 40 foot slapshot screened nicely by Gordie Hampson. Chuck Durocher not- ched the Badgers' final goal when he batted his own rebound past the sprawlingdFricker. Soon after, Murray Eaves and Dennis May closed out the scoring for Michigan. With the sweep over the Badgers, the Wolverines maintained their un- blemished record at Yost, and have established themselves as legitimate contenders for the WCHA title as well as sure participants in the playoffs. The Blue icers are now 18-5-1 overall and 9- 4-1 in WCHA play. at Lerg 101 5. M-Lerg (Baseotto, Brandrup) 7:37; 6. M- Tippett (Speers, Eaves) 8:21; 7. W-Morgan (Grif- fin) 10:14; 8. Illinois 69, Wisconsin 64 MADISON - Clutch free-throw shooting by Reno Gray helped Illinois hold off Wisconsin for a 69-64 Big Ten basketball victory yesterday, the Badgers' fourth consecutive defeat. The Badgers, after trailing 31-27 at intermission, twice got to within two points. They trailed 65-62 when Gray calmly sank two free throws with 24 seconds left to seal the outcome. Indiana 81, N'western 72 EVANSTON-Freshman Isiah Thomas scored a career-high 28 points last night to lead 19th-ranked Indiana to an 81-72 victory over Northwestern in a Big Ten basketball game. Mich. The win was the second straight for the defending NCAA champions and lif- ted their record to 8-7 overall, 2-4.in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes dropped to 11-4 overall and also 2-4 in the conference. Tankers sink Mlini Men's swim coach Bill Farley was pleased with his team after they com- pleted a weekend sweep; defeating Illinois yesterday and Purdue Friday. The meets are a tune up for next week's challenge with perennial Big Ten champion Indiana. His optimism stems from the depth displayed by the Wolverine swimmers this weekend. "We can swim really well being dead tired and that's important because they'll be rested next week," Coach Farley claimed. "Bob Murray swam the 500-yard freestyle for the first time (and placed second)" said Farley. John Spaid also took two firsts in the 1000- and 500-yard MONDAY NIGHT Rick's sponsors a benefit concert to help send VANTAGE POINT "Rockin' at the 1980 Winter Olympics" Progressive Drink Special begins at 9:00. freestyle events with times of 9:28.52 and 4:34.29 respectively. Tom Pederson nabbed first prize in the 50-yard freestyle while teammate Tom Dudley won the 200 yard butterfly. "These guys will make up the depth for us. They were very good and they were tired,"Farley said. He went on to claim that "We're trying to find out things about the team - make determinism on conference teams and give other guysca chance to swim and see what they can do." Michigan divers will also be something to contend with, as two divers, junior Kevin Machemer and sophomore Ron Marriott have already qualified for the NCAA championship meet., The Wolverines worked hard this past weekend, winning the meet on Friday against Purdue as well as yesterday's confrontation against Illinois. The Blue tankers will spend this week resting and preparing for their meet against Indiana next weekend. The Hoosiers have won the Big Ten swimming title for 19 consecutive years. -LISA J.
