ciate director, the second-high-
est position in the bureau.
IIeld replaced Nicholas Cal-
laghan, who was fired by Kel-
ley last Friday in the course of

IIELD, 66, HAS been the spe-
cial agent in charge of the

three years.
Since joining the FBI in
1941, Held has served only one
stint at the Washington head-
quarters. He worked as a mid-

visor for eight years ending in
1955.
By choosing Held for his sec-
ond - in - command Kelley de-

He noted that Held last year
received the attorney general's
distinguished service award for
