McCartney
and Wings
rock 'n'roll
in Detroit
Continued fom Pos 6)
Paul McCartney has never
been known as an intellectual
heavyweight, or even a good
lyricist. His talent has always
been making lovely melodies
that never grow stale. Coupled
with John Lennon's roughness,
wit, and thought, the group
made the most important music
of the sixties. Without Lennon's
influence, however, McCartney
is just another pretty voice, and
he seldom takes advantage of
even that anymore. His stage-
show, while brimming with en-
ergy, enthusiasm and effects,
was in the end shallow and
somewhat disappointing.
SOMEHOW, one expects more
from an ex-Beate= Whatever I
expected, it was clear that the
Beatle Presence was enough
to carry the relatively unimport-
ant music of the Wings, even
in spite of many technical and
artistic problems. The entire
show was marred by bad sound,
with hardly a song getting by
without feedback of some sort.
The special effects and lighting
seemed well-timed but rather
gratuitous to an audience in-
terested in good music, deliver-
ed well.
Linda McCartney added little
in the way of either music or
vocals. Her contributions were
wisely mixed into the back-
ground, and this did not work
against the music as they could
have. One wonders why she was
even there.
The encores were mild, com-
pared to the reception of "Yes-
terday," but smoke machines
helped the relatively well-man-
nered crowd to two encores.
McCartney had been led to be-
lieve that Detroit would be row-
dy in its rockin' and rolin'. In-
stead, it loved Paul McCartney
as a former Beatle and suf-
fered the music of Paul Mc-
Cartney and the Wings. Given
the difference in musical quali-
ty, perhaps that response is the
best that could have been ex-
pected e
