Marine killed during drill
AUSTIN, Tex. (UPI) - A
man who 'ain't willing to die
or kill" has no business in the
Marines, says the former
Marine who recruited a mental-

Harold Faulkner, 40, retired
Marine master sergeant, said
Thursday he had no regrets
about recruitinsg Lynn McClure
of Lufkin, Tex.
'"tf a man ain't wilting to die
or kill, he doesn't have business
there," said Faulkner.
McClure's family is suing the
federal government for $3.5
million for the death of their
son, Me was killed by fellowe
Marines using padded sticks
during a training session at boot
camp near San Diego, Calif.
A former Marine involved in
the incident said a drill
instru~ctor made the then beat
McClure swith the "pugit
sticks."
Faulkner. whose first recruit-
ing assignment was in Austin,
said McClure swas an 'average,
normal guy."
Hosvever, Luofkin residents
swha knewe McClure said he was
mentally defective, "a poor lit-
tle half-swit."
"Ile wvas 20 yea rs old. His
hair wasn't long.Ie was clean-
cut - not in rags and tatters.
He wasn't drooling at the
mouth," Faulkner said.
Faulkner said he did not feel
suspicious about any of Mc-
('lure's answers on the recruit-
ing form. Faslkner sent him
to the Armed Forces Examina-
tion and Entrance Station in
Sans Antonio, where the final
decision was nude to enlist
McClure.
"All I did was process the
pa pers," Faulkner said. "The
kid casme in and made appli-
cation and I sent him to San
Antonio. I thought he seas
qualified.",
