ASHE, the defending champion, had a tough opponent in 19- year-old Ferdi Taygan of Framingham, Mass., but won 7-5, 6-4, 7-5. Connors, the 1974 winner, had an easier time, beating Antonio Zugarelli of Italy 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. OTHER SEEDED players winning included Ilie Nastase of Ro- mania, Bjorn Borg of Sweden, Adriano Panatta of Italy, Giuller- mo Vilas of Argentina, Roscoe Tanner of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., Paul Ramirez of Mexico and Tom Okker of the Nether- lands. Ashe won the first three games, but Taygan took 14 points in a row in an astonishing spell and came back to lead 4-3. Ashe was serving wide to his opponent's forehand and look startled as Taygan hit back winning returns. Later, with Ashe serving at 4-5, Taygan went to set point with another fine forehand across the court. Ashe, however, hit his way out of trouble. CONNORS, meanwhiie, was in trouble with some of the fans for clowning during his one-sided match with Zugarelli. He wag- ged his finger playfully at the Italian after making winning strokes, and the crowd didn't like it. "Get on with it, Connors," a man shouted near the end of the match. European hopefuls had easy passages to the second round. Nastase, the artistic Romanian, bruhed aside Nikki Spear of Ypso- slavia 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Borg, the idol of Sweden, downed Britain's David Lloyd 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. PANATTA, the handsome Italian who won both the Italian and French titles on clay this year, looked less comfortable on the grass here in defeating Jorge Andrew of Venezuela 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4. )SOX Defending champion Arthur Ashe stretches to return a shot by 19 year-old Ferdi Taygan in the first round of the men's singles in the Wimbledon Tennis Championships at Wimbledon, England.
