LYNN, LAST YEAR'S AL Rookie of the Year and Most Valu- able Player, has 559,881 votes. Detroit Tiger teammates Ron LeFlore and Rusty Staub retained their positions as second and third highest vote-getters among AL outfielders. LeFlore has 351,786 votes, Staub has 301,021. California's Bobby Bonds is fourth with 285,960. Boston teammates Carl Yastrzemski and Carlton Fisk, rookie Willie Randolph of the New York Yankees and veteran Fred Patek of the Kansas City Royals took over the voting lead for their positions. YASTRZEMSKI, a five-tine All Star starter in the outfield, took over the lead at first base with 320,842 votes, just over 9,000 ahead of Minnesota's Rod Carew, who has 311,779. Carew has started nine straight All Star Games at second base before switching positions this season. Mike Hargrove of Texas, last week's leader at first base, slipped to fourth place with 219,822, trailing Yastrzemski, Carew and Chris Chambliss of the New York Yankees, who has 236,234. Fisk, twice elected the AL's starting catcher, took a lead of better than 25,000 votes over Thurmon Munson of the New York Yankees, last week's leader. Fisk has 478,948 votes to 453,637 for Munson, who started for the Al, last year. RANDOLPH, the first rookie ever listed on the All Star ballot, moved in front at second base with 369,871 to 342,260 for Bobby Grich of Baltimore. At shortstop, the pint-sized Patek, who has never played in an All Star Game, moved in front with 263,178 votes to 251,638 for Toby Harrah of Texas, last week's leader. PATEK'S Kansas City teammate, third baseman George Brett, holds nearly a 100,000 vote lead with 361,962 to 263,886 for runner-up Don Money of Milwaukee. Balloting continues through July 4 with the All Star Game set for Philadelphia July 13. SPORTS OF THE DAILY Jazz pursue Malone By The Associated Press NEW ORLEANS - The New Oleans Jazz are trying to sidestep the draft pool of play- ers from the American Basket- hall Association by signing 6- foot-11 center Moses Malone, it v as reported yesterday. Jazz general counsel Sheldon Ileychock flew to Washington today to negotiate with Ma- lone's attorney, the New Or- leans States-Item said. "If we can come to a dol- lar figure together, and we're not that far apart, I'm going to sign Moses. I don't think sve are the only team that will sign players before the draft," Behychok was quot- ed by the paper as saying. Malone, who had been prop- erty of the ABA Spirits of St. Louis, was thrown into a draft poul along with other ABA players by the decision of the National Basketball Association not to admit Kentucky and St. Louis (moved to Utah) from the younger league. Bavasi named GM TORONTO - Peter Bavasi, a 12-year veteran of major league baseball administration, has been named vice president and general manager of Toronto's franchise in the American League. Bavasi, 33, has been vice president and general mana- ger of the National League's San Diego Padres the last four years and has been as- sociated with baseball most of his life, His father, Buzzy Bavasi, president of the Padres, was general manaager of the old Montreal Royals of the Inter- national League from 1947 to 1948. The two - man committee, which started looking for an over-all boss of the operation just four weeks ago, was made so of Don McDougall, president of Labatt Breweries, Lt., and Gerry Snyder of Montreal, rep- resenting the other major in- vestor in the baseball opera- tions - R. The bout, billed as the first world martial arts champion- ship, will gross $6.1 million for Ali and up to $4 million for Inoki, according to sponsors.
