LANSING (UPI) - Booming sales of $1 instant tickets and the solid popularity of the ba- sic 50-cent weekly game pro- duced a spectacular profit gain this fiscal year for the Michi- gan Lottery. L o t t e r y spokesman Dave Hanson said yesterday the lot- tery's contribution to the state general fund is expected to reach $100 million, compared with an average of about $65 million in each of the past two years. "We're looking at an increase. of almost S0 per cent, due primarily to instant games," Hanson said. That performance, Hanson said, will make Michigan No. 1 among state lotteries in terms of overall ticket sales for the year ending July 1. The equi- valent of nearly 450 million 50-cent units - the common de- nominator in state lottery sys- tems - were sold in Michigan this year. It also will be a hard act to follow," he said. "Obviously, we can't recap- ture the excitement we had in the first round of the instant game, unless we come up with s o m e t h i n g equally spec- tacular," Hanson said.
