Page Two THE MICHIGAN DAILY Tuesday, June 151976 Newspaper mourns slainreporter PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP)-"May God have mercy on the souls of those who killed him, for I have none," Bernie Wynn said of the murder of his fellow journalist Don Bolles. Wynn is the head of the leg- islative bureau of the Arizona Republic where Bolles was as- signed when his automobile was blown up in gangland style on June 2. He died of his injuries Sunday. "WATCHING his majestic bat- tle against terrible odds, I thought he would live," Wynn said. "His death leaves us all poor." Bolles, who lost both legs and his right arms as a result of the blast outside the Clarendon House hotel, never left the criti- cal list after being hospitalized. Publisher Nina Pulliam said in a signed front-page editorial yesterday: "The Arizona Repub- lic and tht Phoenix Gazette do not intend that Don Bolles' death shall go unavenged. "EVEN DEEPER than our profound grief are our anger and our outrage .. . "We will leave no leaf un- turned in our commitment to see justice done in this terri- ble tragedy." Within hours of the death, John Adamson, 32, a Phoenix racing-dog breeder, was booked into Maricopa County jail on an open murder charge. THE SLAIN reporter had been lured to the hotel by a caller using Adamson's name and pro- mising information on a land deal involving Sen. Barry Gold- water and Rep. Sam Steiger, both Arizona Republicans, and Harry Rosenzweig, prominent Phoenix jeweler and former Re- publican state chairman, police said. Bolles waited in the hotel lob- by a few minutes before he re- ceived a telephone call, then walked to an adjoining park- ing lot. The bomb, attached to the driver's side floorboard and triggered by a radio transmit- ter, exploded as Bolles backed up, investigators said. Wynn said he and Bolles eid not trust Adamson as a reli- able source of information but Bolles decided to check out the tip anyway. POLICE SAID conspiracy and land fraud were involved and further arrests were expected. Adamson, whose photograph Bolles identified from his hos- pital bed, was held without bond and scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing June 21. Detective Capt. Don Lozier de- clined to comment on the motive for the slaying but said he knows who was behind it. "I can't give any names," he added. "If things develop the way they have been going, hopefuliy, there will be more arrests." STEIGER SAID, "The cow- wards responsible for this trag- edy must be brought to justice and dealt with in the most sev- ere manner . . . The congressman said he did not know why his name was mentioned to Bolles by the tip- ster, except to lure the resorter to his death. Goldwater, recovering from hip-joint replacement surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital here, said, "There's no real reaction to a thing like this. It was so damned unnecessary." GOLDWATER and Steiger once wrote letters endorsing sales of lots in a northwest Arizona sub- division to overseas servicemen, the Arizona Republic repor'ed. The promotion later was proven illegal. The letters were requested by Lazar was shot to death gang- land-style in February 1975, a day before he was to testify before a county grand jury prob- ing land fraud. ornj04 Sl 04Mi. -PLUS -- 50c DISCOUNT on all C BETWEEN 9 & 10 P.M. A-9 ONLY Dean was perhaps the most sensitive, intense, vulnerable, best actor to grace the screen. Rebel is his best performance. Play- ing a young man on his first day ina new high school, Dean portrayed the pent-up confustd frustrations of youth perfectly. There are many reasons to see REBEL, but James Dean over- shadows them all. You'll probably never see acting like this again.
