Bees buzz bullpen PITTSBURGH-About 20,000 bees were removed yesterday afternoon from the visitor's bullpen at Three Rivers Stadium, but a few hours later umpire Bob Engel was stung on the cheek during a baseball game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cin- cinnati Reds. "We missed one," said Pirate public relations director Bill Guilfoile after Engel was stung while umpiring behind the plate in the third inning. The bees had gathered overnight on a post in the bullpen area where Reds pitchers had been taking their warmup tosses during their series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Guilfoyle summoned beekeeper Steve Demko and asked him to remove the bees before the Reds arrived at the park. "He (Demko) just walked up, sprayed them with a solution of sugar and water and then scooped them up by the thousands in his bare hands and put them in a big box," Guilfoyle recounted. "I had one foot out the door and I was ready to go, especially when he started kicking the fence to loosen the clumps." Early this year in Cincinnati, another swarm of bees caused a 30-minute delay in a Reds game. Redskins sign Riggins WASHINGTON-Running back John Riggins, probably the best of the 24 free agents who became available May 1, has signed a series of one-year contracts with the Washington Redskins. That gives the National Football League team three players who have gained 1,000 yards a season. Riggins and Coach George Allen declined to discuss details of the contract. It had been reported that Riggins had sought $1.5 million for five seasons, to be paid at $100,000 annually for 15 years. Riggins, who will be entering his sixth pro year, was the first player in Jets history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in one season when he gained 1,006 yards on 238 carries in 1975 He will join a Redskin offense that recently acquired free agent Calvin Hill and Larry Brown, both of whom have gained 1,000 yards in a season. mprove your TV Sound 200% We will connect your TV audio to your stereo Enjoy your TV audio through your stereo speakers, not just the small speaker in your " Adjust TV tone and volume from your stereo.
