A brutal and uncom- pramising film in which no one comes off in a very good light, but don't be scared off by it; this is absolutely brilliant cine- ma, featuring Lang's menacing blend of light and dark ,and Peter Lorre's incredible por- trayal o fthe tragic, perverse killer. Writer - director Frank Gilroy has fashioned a brilliantly perceptive psycho- social commentary on urban so- ciety's descent into darkness, w h i c h stands an sort of a Beautiful People companion piece to the recent Taxi Driver. A wealthy New York couple find their marital relationship slowly disintegrating, marching step by step with the savage disolution of the city around tham.
