Haing never played football in high school or college, Britt is expected to try for a spot with the Lkers, before trying out as a de- fensive back with the Redskins. Britt earned a reputation as an outstanding defen- sive player on the tibskethall court for the Wolverines. John Lucas, the multi-talented athlete from the Uni- versity of Maryland, signed a five-year, no-cut con- tract with the Houston Rockets Tuesday, moments after being the No. - pick in the National Basketball Association draft. But the prized Alt-American guard, described by pro scouts as the ton backcourt player in the nation, also indicated he wold sign a contract with a fran- chis- in World Team Tennis next week. The Chicago Buls, wh-> hind the worst record in the NBA last season, then capitalized on the opportunity to take Scott Mac, making him the No. 2 pick in he draft. The 6-7 May, who averaged 24 points per game for Indiana's national champions last season, was one of three Hoosiers chosen on the first round. The others were guards Quinn Buckner, by the Milwaukee Bucks, and Bobby Wilkerson, by the Mil- waukee Bucks, and Bobby Wilkerson, by the Seattle SuperSonics. Adrian Dantley, of Notre Dame who decided to fore- go his final season of collegiate eligibility and turn pro, went to the Buffalo Braves. He averaged 29 points a game for the Fighting Irish as a junior last season. Kansas City, with the No. 3 pick, took 6-10 Richard Washington from UCLA. Washington, a junior, de- cided to leave school early and was the first player from the undergraduate eligibility list, the so-called hardship" list. Then the Detroit Pistons took 681 Leon Douglas of Alabama. Douglas, who played center for the Crim- son Tide, was considered one of the nation's best pivotmen. Portland, with the fifth choice, took 6-6 forward Wally Walker of Virginia. Golden State, the team with the best record in the league, selected seven-footer Robert Parish from Centenary. Parish originally had been ex- pected to be the first player chosen in the draft by Atlanta, before the Hawks traded that pick to Houston. After Golden State made Parish the No. 8 pick, At- lanta took guard Armond Hill of Princeton. Then guard Ron Lee went to Phoenix, Seattle grabbed Wilkerson, Philadelphia selected guard Terry Furlow, a team- mate of Britt's at Flint Northern, of Michigan State. Washington had two straigh choices and picked Olym- pic cener Mitch Kupchak of North Carolina and guard Larry Wright of Grambling Cleveland selected guard Chuckie Williams of Kansas State. Boston's champion Celtics took forward Norm Cook of Kansas and Golden State chose forward Sonny Parker of Texas A&M. Los Angeles, New Orleans and New York did not have selections in the first round, the Lakers and Jazz having traded theirs away and the Knicks having lost theirs after illegally signing George McGinnis last year. Each, however, picked on the second round. The Lakers' first choice was forward Earl Ta- tum of Marquette. The Jazz' top choice was for- ward Jacky Dorsey of Georgia and the Knicks No. 1 pick was forward Lonnie Shelton of Oregon State. Shelton's selection was called "a gamble" by Knicks President Mike Burke. Meanwhile, the nation's leading scorer last season, guard Marshall Rogers of Pan American University, wasn't chosen until the last pick in the second round, by Golden State, and All-American forward Phil Sell- ers of Rutgers lasted until the third round, when he was taken by Detroit.
