Page Twelve THE MICHIGAN DAILY Thursdoy, May 6, 1976 Irish take two from Blue Michigan loses first in extras, 5-4; then gets blown out, 13-5 Special To The Daily SOUTH BEND - Michigan was nipped in the opener and nailed in the nightcap as Notre Dame swept a doubleheader from the Wolverines yesterday. The Irish took the first game in eight innings, 5-4, and ex- ploded with a 12-run inning to win the second game, 13-5. The double loss drops Michigan's record to 12-13. In non-confer- ence games, the Wolverines have lost six straight and seven of their last eight. Michigan resumes its confer- ence schedule with home double- headers against Ohio State Sa- turday and Indiana Sunday. In yesterday's opener, Rick Pullano's third hit of the game knocked in Dave DeFacci with the winning run with two out in the eighth. DeFacci had doubled off losing pitcher Dan Chapel (0-1), who went the last 4 and a third innings. Michigan jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first on singles by Dave Chapman, Rick Leach and Bill Haslerig plus an Irish error. Three more singles by Jim Berra, Mark Grenkoski and Chapman added another run in the second. Notre Dame came back with two in the third and two in the fourth off starter Stere Perrv. The tying and go-ahead runs were unearned. Michigan re- tied the game in the sixth when 11 slerig singled and rwinded the bases on a wild pitch and two passed balls. The two teams traded un- earned runs to start the second game, and then the Wolverines bjilt a 5-1 lead before the roof fell in. RBI singles by Dan D miapi and Grenkoski scored two in the second. In the third, Berra walked and Grenkoski singled, and both came home after a balk, a wild pitch and a Chapman double. NBA SEMI-FINALS: Phoe- nix 108, Golden State 101. Series tied 1-1. Ace Lary Sorensen coasted throgh those first three innings, giving p only two hits, and Bill Stennet was given the chance to start the fourth. Notre Dame responded with back-to-back dobles, a home run, a single, a bunt (Stennet threw wide to second), and an infield single to fill the bases. Tom.Owens relieved and forced in the tying and go-ahead runs with walks. Two more singles followed to finish Owens. Chapel took over and his stay was highlighted by a three-run homer by Chuck O'Connor. For Notre Dame in the fourth: 16 batters, 12 runs, nine hits, one Wolverine error, three walks, three wild pitches, two home runs and two doubles.eStennet was charged with the loss. Mitch Stoltz went all the way for the Irish, giving up eight hits. Bright spots for Michigan in the windy, dusty day for Michi- gan were Chapman's four hits, Grenkoski's three and Leach's three. Notre Dame finished its season at 16-24. CINCINNATI'S ED ARMISTER seems more than a bit annoyed at being called out on strikes and appears to be contemplating what a 35-inch piece of wood would do to change Ed Runge's mind if applied with considerable force to the umpire's head. Bert Blyleven scattered 12 hits for his fifth straight victory over Detroit in three years. He evened his 1976 record at 2-2. Tigers' starter Dave Roberts lost for the first time in four decisions. CrimonTiewallops Michigan netters,7- Special To The Daily TUSCOLOOSA - Michigan's men's tennis team found out what it is like to be soundly beaten, as the Crimson Tide of Alabama handed Michigan its worst defeat of the year, 7-2. The Wolverines, who usually are on the other end of tennis routs, could only manage to win at number one and three singles. Eric Friedler raised his record to 13-1, and Jim Holman continued to be impressive taking his match in three sets. The number one doubles combination of Friedler and Jeff Etterbeek lost for the first time all season after ten straight triumphs. Alabama, a national power, is 23-3. Michigan dropped to 12-3.
