Chones broke the little toe of his right foot during practice Tuesday, a team spokesman said, and the injured foot now is in a cast. White was nursing his left knee, bruised in a collision with Jerome Anderson. Cowens is suffering back spasms. Celtics' captain John Havli- cek, who missed two games against Buffalo because of a foot injury, Paul Silas and Charlie Scott will round out the starting lineup. Veteran center Nate Thur- mond, acquired by the Cav- aliers from Chicago, had been alternating with Chones as pivot man, but Chones was the team's leading scorer, averaging 15.8 points a game. So Cleveland coach Bill Fitch will be calling for a little extra from his talented bench, which is led by former Michigan star Campy Russell. Russell is sec- ond on the team in scoring with 15 points a game. Seven Cava- liers average double figures. Bruins tired PHILADELPHIA - The Bos- ton Bruins were tired and dis- couraged and the Philadelphia. Flyers were poised for the kill yesterday as the two National Hockey League teams returned here for the fifth game of their Stanley Cup semifinal series. The Flyers, defending Cup champions, have won three straight from the Bruins to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. The fifth game is tonight. Boston coach Don Cherry tried to get his club back to basics in the wake of Tues- day's 4-2 Flyer win in Boston, the second straight victory in Boston. "Our system broke down. It was good enough during the regular season," Cherry said. "Why we have to get away from it in important games like these, I'll never know." But if Cherry didn't know, some of the Flyers had a good idea. They attributed the vic- tories to Philadelphia's swarm- ing, tight-checking defense. "It's very noticeable that their defensemen tire at the end," said Flyer defenseman Tom Bladon. "We have forwards dig- ging at them all the time. and even our defensemen take a shot at keeping them on the run.." In each of the last two games in Boston, the contest was tied going into the last period, but he well-conditioned Flyers pulled away in the final 20 minutes. Canadiens ready MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens returned home yes- terday hoping to finish off the comeback-mindd New York Is- landers in Game Five of the National Hockey League semi- final playoffs. But the Canadiens admitted after Tuesday night's 5-2 loss that certain changes had to be made before they could iook ahead to the Stanley Cup final series against the winner of the Boston-Philadelphia matchup. "We're going to really have to work hard to beat them," said Montreal left wing Steve Shutt. "We weren't really working. We let up just a little bit and as I said before, if we didn't play 100 per cent against the Islanders we'd get beat. That's what happened." "We started slowly," added goalie Ken Dryden. "We were fortunate that in the first three games we could start that way against them and win. But against opposition like this, it's foolish to think that can keep up forever. To the Islanders, the task is clear cut: win or go home for the summer. Ever cheerful New York goalie Glenn Resch doesn't think it's over yet. "The Canadiens got the breaks in the first three games, and we got the breaks tonight," he said after Tuesday night's con- test. "Hopefully, we'll continue to convert our chances and turn it around. "The pressure was on them (Tuesday night). We had noth- ing to lose but to prove our- selves. Now, if we continue to exert pressure on Dryden, we can beat him. He's human."
