An Israeli official said the invasion has not tipped the scale toward Israeli interven- tion. Palestinian guerrillas said about 7,000 troops backed by 150 tanks breached ti-e aastern border yesterday while 'nother 2,000 Syrian soldiers invaded from the north. THEY HALTED Moslem as- saults on three Christian towns and disarmed guerrillas and militiamen on main reads, the Palestinians said. The Syrian forces ran into a short battle with renegade Mos- lems from the disintegrated Lebanese army near the cross- roads town of Chtoura. They pushed ahead to within rifle range of the key Dahar at-Bai- Men's WEEKEND interpersonal workshop/compout JUNE 18, 19, 20 (sliding scale fee) CONTACT: Richard Kemp- ter. 995-0088 & leave mes- sooe, or Michael Andes at 662-2801. sponsored by: Lifework Counselinq dar pass on the Damascus-Bei- rut highway, within 21 miles of the capital. Leftist Lebanese forces mass- ed troops there behind tanks from the rebel Lebanese Arab army. THEY WERE taking up posi- tions of hilltops with rifles, pis- tols, rocket-propelled grenades and 50 caliber machine guns," said photographer Harry Koun- dakjian after driving here from Damascus. "Its crazy. What can they do against those big Rus- sian tanks?" Lebanese security officials said Moslem-Christian combat out- side Syrian-controlled areas di- minished sharply later yesterday as militia learers concentrated on news of the Syrian advance. Palestinian and Syrian sourc- es said the invasion was the first step toward the total occu- pation of Lebanon to forcibly wrench apart the seemingly i r r e c o ncilable right - wing Christians and Moslem leftists, Their 14-month-old war has kill- ed more than 26,000 persons. THERE IS JUST no other way to end it," said a well-informed Syrian. The sources predicted that up to 50,000 Syrian regulars will move into Lebanon and stay there as long as one year wnile Lebanese politicians are forced to agree on a compromise set- tlement. But the Moslem-controlled Bei- rut Radio said: "Damascus has President-elect Elias Sarkis as- assured Lebanon the interven- tion is designed only to help sume the reins of oawer under conditions of re-established se- curity." PREVIOUS INCURSIONS by smaller Syrian forces nave fail- ed to quell the fighting. The war has confounded all efforts at peaceful mediation, including major missions by Syria, the Arab League, the United Statees and France - Lebanon's orner administrator. Freench President Valery Giscard d'Estaing has even offered to send French troops to Lebanon. In Tel Aviv, an official Israeli military source said the Syrian thrust was not enough to trig- ger an Israeli military reaction. The Israeli government has warned there is a "red line of Syrian intervention" in Lebanon that it will not tolerate. But the invasion raised the specter of a showdown between Syria and the Palestinian guer- rilla movement, which has vow- ed to fight any attempt to hob- ble its freedom of movement in Lebanon. REPORTS FROM Damascus said Assad had received full backing from his ruling Baath Socialist party to restore order in Lebanon. The Syrian move coin-ided with the start of a visit to Da- mascus by Soviet Premier Alex- ei N. Kosygin. His government is the major arms supplier for both Syrian President Hafez As- sad and Yasir Arafat, the Pales- tinian guerrilla clief. Arafat told a, nonaligned co- ference in Algiers tnat a "French-American-Zionist con- spiracy" was seeking to destroy Lebanon with the help of un- named Arab allies, presumably Syria. He was later seen ;o a tense discussion with Syrian Foreign Minister Abdelhalim Khaddam. KAMAL JUMBLATT, the over- all leader of the Lebanese left- ist forces, declared:."We will resist the Syrian invasion by all ways." He then went snto an emergency meeting with his allies. The leftist Moslem coalition under Jumblatt would stand lit- tle chance against the Soviet- equipped Syrian army, most cb- servers feel. But the Syrians are known to be anxious to avoid all-out fighting between their soldiers and the leftists. Palestinian sources said a Sy- rian regiment of 2,000 men and 60 Soviet-made T54 and T62 tanks began the deployment yes- terday, running into the Akkar valley in northernmost Lebanon.
