Saturday, May 29, 197E THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Eleven HURON FASHIONS 2-HITTER Owchinko blanks Michigan By BILL STIEG YPSILANTI - Eastern Mich- igan's powerful lefthander Bob Owchinko frustrated Big Ten champion Michigan yesterday with a splendid two-hitter as the Hurons blanked the Wolverines 6-0 in the first round of the NCAA Mideast Regional. Michigan was helpless against Owchinko, whose fast balls and curves sailed and swooped like barn swallows. He allowed only an infield single in the third and a leadoff double in the ninth. Amazingly, the ninth-inning double by Jim Berra was the first ball the Wolverines hit out of the infield. Owchinko prompt- ly returned to form, however, setting the last three batters down in order to preserve his shutout and his team-leading 11th victory. Eastern plays Illinois State -v{.tor over Southern Illinois yesterday, 5-2 - today at 1 p.m. Losers Michigan and Southern Illinois meet at 10 a.m. today in the double-elim- ination tournament. The winner of the morning game will play the loser of the afternoon game at 4 p.m. today. Designated hitted Ted Dasen provided the offensive power for Eastern by knocking home three runs with a solo home run and a bases-loaded double. But Owchinko was the star. "He's been coming on tough the last three times out," said Huron coach Ron Oestrike. "He was real consistent out there. When he throws strikes he's tough." Owchinko walked only two, allowed only four baserunners, and pitched to only 30 hitters- three over the minimum. "I had a live fastball," said Owchinko. "The ball was jumping off at the end-that's why they were hitting so many fouls to the opposite side." Besides ground-outs and eight strike-outs, Michigan had five pop-outs, four of them in foul territory. Berra's line double over the centerfielder's head was the first fair ball beyond the skin of infield. "I had good breaking stuff, too," said Owchinko, who was battered around a bit when he faced Michigan last week in relief. "I think that was a point in my favor," he said. "They might have thought they could hit the hell out of me. It was good to pitch a nine-inning game (vs. Detroit) four days ago." Eastern scored three times before Michigan got a base- runner. Dasen, Eastern's sec- ond hitter, belted his wind- aided, opposite-field homer in the first inning off starter and loser Lary Sorensen. In the second, Glenn Ambrose grounded a double down the left field line and slid home when Thom Boutin bounced a single through the right side. Boutin went to second on the throw home and made third on a ground-out to short. Bob Vizthum followed with a grounder to first-baseman Bob Wasilewski, who bobbled the ball while Boutin scored. Soren- sen got Brian Petroff to fly out, and thereafter let only one Huron reach base until the eighth. Eastern added three more runs in the eighth on a single, a hit batsman, a walk and Dasen's slicing double off the left field fence. Sorensen gave up only five hits and struck out four in his third straight loss. Michigan's first hit was also by Berra-a curve ball which he topped down the third base line. Petroff bobbled the ball, but there was no chance of catching Berra. Until Berra's double in the ninth, that scratch hit was all that stood between Owchinko and a no-hitter.
