M".- It was James W. Marshall who picked up some yellow mineral he found in the trailrace of John Sutter's sawmill on the American River the morning of Jan. 24, 1848. The result was a gold rush. Marshall, however, died a pauper, unable to establish a claim of his own to some of the gold-rich areas. He entered a series of bad business projects and went heavily into debt. In 189 the State Legislature built a monument to Marshall overlooking the spot where he found the gold. Mrs. Gaines who until her appointment was the mayor pro tem, is the city's first woman and black mayor. A life-long resident of Ecorse she is the mother of nine chil- dren.
