West Point juniors held back

WEST POINT, N.Y. (UPI)-
The U.S. Military Academy's
entire junior class will be held
over after next Wednesday's
graduation ceremonies to pro-
vide additional time for investi-
gation of t h e mushrooming
cheating scandal.
The academy announced Wed-
nesday the Class of '77 will re-
main at West Point for seven to
10 days. More than half of the
class was to stay on anyway,
but the others were to report
for summer training at other
Army posts or go on leave.

It also was disclosed that the
number of new cases to be in-
vestigated has increased from
the 70 to 90 announced Monday
to 98.
ABC radio, quoting sources,
said around 500 third-year ca-
dets are now suspected of creat-
ing or of tolerating cheating on
a take home electrical engineer-
ing exam in March.
An academy spokesman said,
"there is absolutely no founda-
tion for that number."
"There has been nothing to
substantiate the charges that it

goes beyond the initial 48 and a
possibility that an additional 98
cadets may be involved," the
spokesman said.
The academy said it has ex-
panded the officer-controlled in-
ternal review panel formed
Monday to investigate the cases
into five panels.
Major William Smullen, a
spokesman for the academy,
said, "The expanded panel will
be able to process the total num-
ber of cases in a shorter time
while still insuring thorough-
ness."
