Friday, May 2.1, 1976 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Elevent Friday, May21, 1976 THE MICHIGAN DAILY ~ I SPORTS OF THE DAILY Benson will sit out Olympics J I NEW CASTLE, Pa.- Indiana basketball star Kent Benson, his left wrist mending following a second operation two weeks ago, said yesterday he will be unable to play in the Olympics. "If I can't represent the United States to the best of my ability, I shouldn't go," said the 6-foot-11 center, the sole returning starter from the Hoosiers' undefeated NC- AA championship team. Complications d e v e 1- oped two weeks ago. A 10- minute surgical procedure turned into a 2 -hour opera- tion after doctors determined that one of the pins was em- bedded too deeply and had to be removed. The cast, which was supposed to come off then, will be left on for another three weeks and a special rehabilitation program for the wrist was postponed for another five to eight weeks. "With that amount of delay," Benson said, "there just is no way I can be ready. I had to make the decision now in all fairness to the United States, the Olympic Committee and to the other Olympic contenders." -AP Bell honored Gordon Bell was voted Sen- ior Athlete of the Year by the undergraduate M Club. The award was presented Wednes- day night at the Quarterback Club banquet at Barton Hills Country Club. Athletesunominated for the award were Bell, Wayman Britt, and Dick Walterhouse. Bell, an All Big Ten selec- tion, led the conference in rushing last year with 1388 yards, to complete his colleg- iate record at 2800 yards, sec- ond best in Wolverines history. Bell also -scored 14 touch- downs in 1975, all but one by rushing. Be totaled 29 for his career, to rank only Tom Har- mon's 33, and Billy Taylor's 32. Ali settles BONN, West Germany -- A threat to call off Muham- mad Ali's heavyweight title de- fense against Richard Dunn of England disappeared Thursday after a $160,000 compromise that left Ali saying, "It wouldn't have hurt me none to go home." The money was equivalent to the amount Ali was estimated to have to pay in German tax- es on the fight Tuesday. Arum said the problem was resolved when tax officials agreed to re- duce the amount to $160,000. -AP Fans flock NEW YORK - B o m e- town pride in the two defending league champions two new and flamboyant owners and the re- turn to a sports shrine has helped boost m a j o r league baseball attendance by almost OPEN TONIGHT till 1a.m. PINBALL, BOWLILNG & BILLIARDS.
