Thursday, May 20, 19716 THE MICHIGAN DAILY , Page Efever Hurons haress Michigan 4 "Wo By BOB MILLER The Eastern Michigan Hurons proved why they are one of the nation's best baseball teams, yesterday, gaining a pair of vic- tories over Michigan at Fisher Stadium. The first game featured a barrage of hits and an exciting finish, as EMU won 7-6, on T ho m Boutin's eighth-inning home run. Eastern followed that with a standout performance by pitcher John Martin who shut- out the Wolverines 5-0, to com- plete the doubleheader sweep. The MAC champion Hurons will be one of four teams in the NCAA mideast regionals, join- ing Southern Illinois, Illinois State and the Big. 10 champ, either Michigan, MSU or Min- nesota. In the opener, Michigan hur- ler Craig McGinnis and his counterpart Bud Yanus posted goose eggs in the first inning, but once Michigan opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, the hitters took over. First baseman Bob Wasilew- ski staked the Wolverines to a short 1-0 lead, poking a two-out home run. Eastern tied it up in the top of the third when left fielder Ted Dasen singled home third baseman Brian Petroff who had walked and stolen second base. The Hurons increased their lead to 4-1, when catcher Jerry Keller doubled, went to third on Glenn Ambrose's ground out to first, and scored on a Boutin double. Boutin had three hits and a walk in the first game. A sacrifice and an error brought in two more runs. Keller poled a home run in the fifth to up the EMU) advantage to 5-1. Michigan fought back stub- bornly, tallying two runs in the bottom of the fifth, when second baseman Dick Walter- house singled with two outs, advanced on Ricky Leach's safety and scored on Bill Has- lerig's two-bagger. L e a c h scored later on a ground out. The Maize and Blue tied it at five all in the bottom of the sixth. Shortstop Jim Berra walked, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on an error and came home on Dave Chapman's RBI single. Walter- house followed with a sacrifice fly to knot the score. After EMU went ahead in the top of the seventh, Michigan tied it up again when Haslerig singled, center fielder Dan Damiami doubled and catcher Jim Capoferi bounced out. But Eastern won the game with two out in the eighth, when Boutin hit a tremendous home run that travelled nearly 400 feet into the wind. Michigan rallied in the home half, putting two men on base, but Leach and Haslerig went down swinging to end the game. In the night cap, the Hurons scored all the runs they needed in the top of the first. Michi- gan starter Bill Stennett walk- ed the lead-off man, gave up a double and a wild pitch, and allowed a run when Keller's topper back towards the mound enabled runner Dan Schmitz to scurry home. A single, double and infield hit upped EMU's lead to 3-0 in the second, putting the Wolver- ines into a deep hole. Pitcher John Martin dug the hole deeper before the Hurons buried Michigan for good. He kept the Maize and Blue in check throughout the game, al- lowing only six scattered singles, and thwarting any Michigan threats before they became serious. Three singles gave Eastern a four run cushion, and the Hurons added their final run in the final frame taking advantage of a single, an error And an infield hit. Michigan's attempts to mount an offensive against Martin were futile, the farthest the Wol- verines' got was an error and an infield hit in the seventh, before Chapman, Walterhouse and Wasilewski were retired to preserve the shutout.
