GRAND RAPIDS (AP)-While place, despite cool temperatures

President Ford waited to see
how he would fare in his first
statewide contest in Michigan,
a survey indicated he would do
well in his home town in yes-
terday's presidential primary.
An Associated- Press spot
check of voters leaving five vot-
ing places, covering 12 precincts
in Grand Rapids and its sub-
arns, failed to find a single vote
for Republican challenger Ron-
ald Reagan. And, the only ad-
mitted crossover voters were
two Democrats rallying behind
the President.
CONVERSATIONS with 35 vot-
ers found 25 were for President
Ford, six refused to answer and
four named Democratic candi-
dates. Seven of those voting for
the President reported some
personal tie to him.
There was a steady flow of
voters at all but one polling

after thc psls opened their 13-
hour run.
While voting was reported
heavy here, it was average to
light at most other polling plac-
es across the state.
THE PRESIDENT'S home
town links, plus a belief he is
honest and doing a good job
were the primary factors cited
by his backers.
"I'm a crossover. On account
of I know him personally. He's
gotten Democratic support from
here all his political life,' said
Joe Gillard, a lawyer. Gillard
said he 'wasta member of Ford's
Boy Scout troop.
"When he came in, the coun-
try probably was at the lowest
state I'e seen to my 45 years.
It's ohvious the man has done
tatter than anyone thought any-
body could do," said Ken Thom-
as, nedia specialist with the
city's schools.,
