CLEVELAND - The Cleve-
land Cavaliers, ignited by vet-
eran center Nate Thurmond and
reserve guard Austin Carr, roar-
ed away from the Boston Celtics
in the fourth quarter and evened
their best-of-seven National Bas-
ketball Association sdmifinal
series at two games apiece with
a 106-87 victory last night.
The Cavaliers outscored the
Celtics 33-17 in the final period
before a record crowd at the
Coliseum.
Leading 79-77 with 8:30 left to
play, the Cavaliers exploded
behind the shooting of Carr and
the rebounding of Thurmond to
outscore the Celtics 16-4 in the
next five minutes, 20 seconds,
taking a 85-81 lead.
Cleveland coasted the rest of
the way, pulling Thurmond with
jist under two minutes remain-
ing. The 13-year veteran, press-
ed into service as a starter for
the Boston series because of an
injtry to Jim Chones, scored, 12
points, grabbed eight rebounds
and blocked five Celtics shots.
Carr, who scored only five
points and made several er-
rors after coming off the
bench in the second period,
scored 11 points for the fast-
breaking Cavaliers in the final
period after sitting out the
third quarter.

Braves' owner Ted Turner may
be using million-dollar pitcher
Andy Messersmith illegally -
as advertising for his television
station.
National League President
Charles Feeney asked Turner
yesterday to meet with him
next week in San Francisco to
discuss Messersmith's uni-
form, among other topics.
"I've invited him (Turner) to
lunch when the team is out
here," said Feeney by tele-
phone from San Francisco.
"That's one of the things I
want to talk to him about."
Messersmith, like all the
Braves' players, has a nick-
name sewn on the back of his
uniform. In Messersmith's
- case, the nickname is Channel
and his number 17.
Turner's Atlanta television
station is Channel 17 and, ac-
cording to league officials, that
is a kind of advertising which
is frowned upon in major league
baseball.
