Main, Ann Arbor. eF520 WASHINGTON (MP -- Ameri- can Telephone & Telegraph Co. (AT&T) plans to pay an addi- tional $2.5 million to correct widespread deficiencies in the way it has carried out a job dis- crimination settlement with the federal government. The Labor Department said most of the payments will be distributed to women. AT&T said about 2,50 women and mi- nority group employes will re- ceive checks ranging from $125 to $1,500. THE COMPANY agreed to the settlement after a special gov- ernment coordinating commit- tee found that 17 of the Bell System's operating agencies failed to recruit, hire, train and promote women and minority group members in compliance with a 1973 agreement. AT&T agreed to pay $45 mil- lion in 1973 and $301 million in 1974 as a result of govern- ment findings that some em- ployes were victims of sex dis- crimination. "Some Bell employes who should have benefitted from the original decree had experienced no improvement in their em- ployment," said William J. Kil- berg, Labor Department solici- tor. THE NEW order provides a mechanism for them to "catch up to where they should be, and to compensate them for the de- lay," Kilberg said. The company also agreed to spend some of the money for special efforts to recruit and train female and male minority group employes. The agreement signed by AT- &T and the government was submitted to a U. S. District Court in Philadelphia Tuesday for its approval. The Bell Sys- tem had disagreed with the charges of noncompliance and had contended that a good faith effort had been made to meet the objectives established in the original consent decree CHARING CROSS BOOKSHOP Used, Fine and Scholarly Books 316 S.
