No, I don't think it was a fair trial, hut t don't know the law. I just truot in the Lord that she'll get justice some- where." to Syracuse, N.Y., Karen De- Crow, president of the National Organization for Women, mooued a statement hailing the acquit- tal. "WE HAVE believed in and supported Joan Little all along. We now have for the first time a legal precedent for a wo- man's right to defend herself against s e x u a l attack," the statement said, to his 59 minute charge to the jury, which included seven wo- men, Hlobgood said self defenoe against sexual attack was a de- fence in a muirder case. Tuiry foreman Mark Nielson, a white, 26-year-old stereo sales- man, said the jurors sat down in a circle, and each of them discussed their feelings about the case, wvhich were that she was not guilty, and then a for- mal vote was taken. "I TRIED to maintain a sus- picious attitude about what they said," Nielson said, referring to the testimony. "Hler story was a logical one, an7d the pieces fit." Jennie Lancaster, a white 25- year-old counselor in the state prison system, said the prose- cution's case was not enlough to support a conviction. "t was a case of law aod facts," she said. Donllt Livingstone, a 22- year-old black water bill col- lector for the city of Raleigh, said, "I thought the investiga- lion was very sloppy, We realige they don't have facilities like in New York City and all, but they could have done better." There wao, in fact, very little conflicting testimony in the prosecution's case, built entirely of circumstantial evidence. The investigation, carried out in "a lot of confusion," resulted in a single, unidentifiable fingerprint and several pieces of missing evidence, When the state rested its case, Hobgood reduced the charges from first to second de- gree pmurder. Alligood's body, nude from the waist down, was found in Little's cell and perhaps the most telling piece of evidence was semen found on his thigh. THE DEFENSE introduced several other female prisoners of the jail to tell of Alligood's sexual ad -ances, but Little's testimony, which ran over to days, was the bulk of their case. She claimed Alligood entered her cell with the icepick and forced her to perform oral sex on him. In the midst of the act, she said, she grabbed the ice- pick and began hacking at him. She grabbed her clothes and fled the ,jail, she said, and last saw Alligood upright, bleeding, hut staring at her with a "silly looking grin." One of her attorneys, Marvin Miller, soiid she was acquitted partly because "the case was a crock from the beginning. But the real reason was. that there was an international outcry for Joan Little. A lot of people got together to raise money and all of these attorneys." MONEY! need some? Spend 2 weeks selling Daily sub- scriptions and make' a bundle. Call for information: 764-0560 f, / .
