(,)- Dennie Meyer, a club pro who doesn't expect to win and has no intention of playing the tour, shot a startling seven-under- par 64 yesterday and took a one- shot lead after the first round of the $200,000 Greater Harford Open. "I hadn't planned on playing here," Meyer said after record- ing eight birdies on the 6,598- yard Wethersfield Country Club course. "But Dave Stockton (the defending champion) told me it was a short course so I thought I'd try it." It's only Meyer's third tour event this year, and possibly his last. "'I'M GOING home after this one," said Meyer, a 31-year-old club pro at a public course near Palm Springs, Calif. "I might try to qualify for one more later in the year." But he has no plans to try the tour. "No, I don't think so. I've got a nice wife and a nice family and I don't think I'd want to try it. Not unless some- thing unforseen and unexpected, ike winning the tournament, happened." MEYER HELD a one-stroke Hartford leaders Dennie Meyer 32-32-64 Austin Straub 33-32-65 Don Bles 33-32-65 J.C. Straub, 'playing with Meyer in a pairing that was completely ignored by the gallery, had a 65, six under par. Bies matched the figure late in the day. The group at 66, five under and two back of the surprise leader, included J. C. Snead, Hubert Green, Mike Hill, David Glenz and Andy North. Johnny Miller, experimenting with a changed swing, had to birdie two of his last three holes for a 69 and was tied at that figure with Gary Player and Stockton. "I threw away about three strokes, but I'm pretty happy with the way I finished," said Miller, the record-setting sen- sation of the early season. "I started hooking the ball before going to the Masters, and almost won it. You have to hook the ball there. I guess I was so happy with the hook I stayed with it" he said Eight colleges form new basketball conference CHICAGO (AS-Officials of eight major colleges adopted a constitution for a new basketball league yesterday, to be known as the Eastern Independent Collegiate Basketball League (EICBL).
