Wednesday, August 43, 1975 THE MICHIGAN DAILY P-ige Eleer. RICH LERNER'S COLUMN Bowi rule changes welcome There's a new feeling of excitement running through the Big Ten conference. Part of the reason is that, most ob- servers feel, the days of the "Big Two and Little Eight" are coming to an end, but even more important is that this year, for the first time, a Big Ten team will be able to go to a bowl game, other than the Rose Bowl. A new rule proposal would allow the conference runner-up to attend any bowl game after December 25. The succeed- ing teams in the standings would he able to attend bowl games on the con- dition that each team that finished ahead of them was invited to a bowl game. The conference champion will still par- ticipate in the Rose Bowl. NO OFFICIAL announcement has been made yet, but for all practical purposes, a decision has been reached. "It's a foregone conclusion, to date we've had just seven institutions respond and they've all responded favorably," s a i d conference commissioner Wayne Duke. "Even of the other three were to re- spond negative, it passes. However you want to be in the position for the oppor- tunity for the three remaining institu- tions to respond, because this is a ten team league. "Just a majority is necessary, we need six, and we have seven," Duke added. IF THE PAC-EIGHT were to reject the proposal it would still bind the Big Ten to an exclusive Rose Bowl contract. But Duke insists that this will not be the case. "The Pac-Eight has not announced its decision, but we have every indication that it's going to be the same," Duke said. "I'm confident, in fact, I know that the Pac-Eight is going to go in that direction. "The only games excluded are those before December 26," Duke said. "The reasons for that are exam schedules and so on, after December 26 you're in a vacation period." EIGHT BOWL games in addition to the Rose Bowl take place after Decem- ber 25: the Cotton, Sugar, Orange, Peach, Sun, Fiesta, Gator, and Astro- Bluebonnet bowls. Hypothetically, up to nine conference from the Rose Bowl in three years," he ment bids kept fan interest alive. jokingly added. COACHES, players and fans alike are applauding the proposed change. The new rule will certainly intensify and sustain interest in the conference race. "It's about ten years too late," en- thused Tony Dungy, quarterback for the Minnesota Gophers. "In the past five years everyone's been really interested in the first three games and then they just wait for the Michigan-OSU game." The situation can be likened to the Big Ten basketball race. During the 160's, only one Big Ten team could participate THERE IS no reaeon why a similar change would not boost interest and at- tendance in the football race. The proposed change will also help recruiting at all ten conference schools. A prospective recruit will know that a conference school courting him has a four out of ten chance of going to a bowl game, instead of only a one out of ten chance. Revenue increase is another reason, the time for change has come. Duke in- sists that, "The revenue derived from the other bowl games is not the finan- cial bonanza a lot of people envision." 5. - ' C dt26ft.. *0~**** .* .~iggtc... p i Nevertheless, in these days of climb "t'sbouttenyears too ate. However, realistically, three, four, or as many as five Big Ten teams can expect bowl bids. Earlier in the summer Michigan coach Bo Schembechler was on a promotional tour for ABC sports that took him through Texas, where he was continual- ly hounded by officials from the Cotton Bowl. "I did talk to people from the Cotton Bowl," Bo admits. "The only reason was that I haven't talked to anyone prohibited member schools from attend- ing the National Invitational Tourna- ment, the NCAA tournament only per- mitted one team from each league, and the Conference Commissioner's Tourney had not been born yet. Now as many as four conference bas- ketball teams may participate in post- season tournaments. The change served to magnify interest in the loop race this past season.
