The only semblance of a report received over the week- end was a dispatch to the State department from Bangui, the capi- tal city of the Central African Republic, that the team would be visiting there later this month. Prior to leaving Ann Arbor the team had made no plans to visit either Bangui or any other city in the Contral African Re- public. Both the State Department and the Sports Information Department were confused by the dispatch. Tum pane 'de-canonized' The New Orleans Saints of the National Football League cut seven players yesterday, including rookie tackle Pat Tumpane. Tumpane was a starting offensive tackle for Michigan's 1974 Big Ten co-championship football team. WP) - Hennepin County Atty. Gary Flakne said today he will not seek a second trial of Boston Bruins hockey player David Forbes on an aggravated assault charge. Flakne said he felt fully justified in bringing the case to trial. "I feel that the jury said loud and clear that they do not feel that an athlete involved in an athletic contest should be exempt from the criminal laws," Flakne said "I wholeheartedly agree with that position." Pirates stretch lead By The Associated Press ATLANTA - Pittsburgh left- hander John Candelaria limited Atlanta to four hits in six in- nings and Manny Sanguillen keyed a six-run rally in the ninth inning with a two-run dou- ble last night as the Pirates bombed the Braves 8-1. The victory halted a five- game Pittsburgh losing streak. Candelaria, 6-2, didn't allow a Braves runner past second base before leaving the game at the end of the sixth inning after de- veloping a blister on his finger. He was replaced by Kent Te- kulve who surrendered a home run to Darrell Evans, his 19th of the year, in the eighth. Padres locked NEW YORK - Ed Kranepool belted a three-run homer and Skip Lockwood posted his first National League victory with five innings of scoreless relief last night as the New York Mets beat the San Diego Padres 8-4. Lockwood, 1 - 1, replaced starter George Stone at the start of the third inning and held the Padres scoreless through the seventh. Rick Baldwin finished up. Reds roll CINCINNATI - Ken Griffey collected four base hits, includ- ing a two-run single, and Tony Perez drove in three runs with a double and single last night to power the Cincinnati Reds past the Chicago Cubs, 5-3. Jack Billingham, 13-5, over- came a shaky start for a com- plete game victory. The Reds came from behind against Rick Reuschel, 8-3, who recorded eight strikeouts in the six in- nings he worked. Griffey's two-run single in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie and the Reds added four more runs in the eighth on a two-run single by Perez and a two-run double by George Foster. Giants hail MONTREAL - Ed Halicki struck out 12 Expos and Chris Speier drove in three runs last night as the San Francisco Giants whipped the Montreal Expos 9-2. Speier hit a two-run double in the first inning after the Giants loaded the bases against Expos starter Steve Rogers, 8-9. Der- rel Thomas singled and Bobby Murcer and Willie Montanez drew walks to set up Speier's hit. Halicki, 6-9, contributed a two-run single in the third that pushed the Giants lead to 5-1. Dave Rader also singled home a run in the inning. Halicki allowed seven hits before lead- ing at the start of the eighth. 16 in a row DETROIT - Gaylord Perry fired a five-hitter and Toby Harrah hit a two-run homer to lead the Texas Rangers to a 7-0 victory over Detroit last night, handing the Tigers a club rec- ord third consecutive shutout and extending t h e i r losing streak to 16 games.
