The losing streak matched the mark set by the 1920 Tigers and tied in 1953. HUGHES was staked to a run in the opening inning on singles by Dan Ford, Tony Oliva and Eric Soderholm. The Twins made it 2-0 against Joe Coleman, 8-14, in the second when Jerry Terrell led off with a single, moved to third on a two-base throwing error by shortstop To m Veryzer and came home on Lyman Bostock's single. Hughes, 10-9, blanked the Ti- gers until the seventh when they scored on singles by Veryzer, Ron LeFlore and Gary Suther- land. Minnesota then scored an insurance run in the ninth on two-out singles by Glenn Borg- mann, Bostock and Ford. Astros dump Bucs HOUSTON - Cliff Johnson doubled home the tie-breaking run in the third innning and scored on Doug Rader's single as the Houston Astros rallied to defeat the slumping Pitts- burg Pirates 5-3 last night. Jim Crawford, 2-3, replaced starter Doug Konnieczny with two out in the first inning and Pittsburgh ahead 3-0 on Dave Parker's 19th homer and blank- ed the Pirates the rest of the way on four hits. "I imagine it'll take about a week longer than I first expected," Giel said Thursday. "We haven't limited our search to just those who applied. This could be called a comprehensive effort." The university's search extended to Creighton Coach Tom Apke Thursday. ATLANTA-The Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association obtained forward Connie Hawkins from the Los An- geles Lakers yesterday in exchange for a future draft choice and immediately signed the 6-foot-8 veteran, a Hawks spokesman said. Hawkins, 31, averaged eight points in 43 games for the Lakers last season, missing much of the year with an injured hand. He has a six-year NBA career average of 17.9 points per game. ABC lines u stars NEW YORK-Former coaches Ara Parseghian and Bob De- vaney will appear as guest commentators on the first two nationally televised college football games of the 1975 season, ABC announced yesterday. Parseghian, who retired as coach at Notre Dame last year, will join play-by-play announcer Keith Jackson for the first tIe- cast of the season, the Missouri-Alabama game on Monday night, Sept. 8. Devaney, former Nebraska coach, will work the Notre Dame-Boston College game on Sept. 15.
