First, Ann Arbor 663-2401 Aged study art of belly dancing NEW YORK ()-"I expect to be the world's most supple grandmother," said Serena the belly dancer, who taught the fine art of squirming and wig- gling yesterday to a group of gyrating geriatrics. "It's an art, and it also is an exercise," the brown-eyed Se- rena said with impassioned ser- iousness. "BUT THE LAST thing I want to be known as is an ex- ercise queen. S want to be known as an artist," Serena im- plored. To the half-dozen or so grand- mothers and great-grandmoth- ers who joined Serena for a les- son at Manhattan's Roseland Dance City, life just hasn't been the same since they took up belly dancing, they claim. Decked out in black tights and draped with golden spangles, 75-year-old Ethel Sigoda had nothing but praise for the finer art of the Middle East. "YOU CAN learn how to haa- die your body until eternity," said Ethel, a great-grandmother who lives with her 77-year-old businessman--husband at a fash- ionable Park Avenue address. "Since I started this I feel like an entirely different per- son," said 67-year-old Irene Murad, another New Yorker, who said she went into a deep depression after the death of her husband two years ago. At the urging of her family, Irene said, she started taking belly dancing. lessons. "I love it," Irene said. "Sf I could come down here every day I would," BELLY DANCING, said Se- rena, is body therapy. "It's a pleasant way of relaxa- tion, exercise and therapy to help keep you fit, she added. "Most of the dance is done in one place. It's a stationary kind of exercise," added Serena, who currently is campaigning to demonstrate that belly dancing is for people of all ages. SERENA, who has 1,500 pu- pils, staged yesterday's class in preparation for her upcoming concert next week at Roseland. A sensuous Serena, by her own wish, remains ageless. But with a 21-year-old son soon to be married, Serena fig- ures "I could be a grandmother very soon." In the background, the tills clanged and the oud twanged as Serena returned to the stage to lead the class through their wiggles and shimmies. Observed Susan Seputas, a young New York secretary who watched the aging dancers gy- rate: "There's going to be a lot of turned on old men in the city." Why not join the DAILY?
