The Michigan Daily Vol. LXXXV, No. 57-S Ann Arbor, Michigan-Wednesday, August 6, 1975 Ten Cents Twelve Pages Hoffa famil puzzled over adopted son's whereabouts DETROIT M - The family of missing ex-Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa is puzzled over the whereabouts of Charles O'Brien, the adopted son of Hoffa and a union organizer, family members said yesterday. "We're trying to find him," said Hoffa's son, Detroit attorney James Hoffa. The family has not filed a missing person report with authorities. FRIENDS SAID it is not unusual for O'Brien, an international organizer for the Teamsters, to disappear for a few days. But they said it was surprising that he is missing at this time because he was very close to Hoffa and could be expected to stay with the family. O'Brien was last heard from on Thursday, the day after the elder Hoffa disappeared. O'Brien "told conflicting stories" when he telephoned the family after learning Hoffa failed to return from a luncheon meet- ing, the younger Hoffa said. He did not explain what he meant by "conflicting stories." A man identifying himself as O'Brien called WXYZ-TV in Detroit last night, and told a reporter he was away on union business and planned to return in a few days. He declined to answer any questions. An investigative source said the FBI has obtained a handful a of notes listing Hoffa's appointments of several weeks before he vanished. The source said the notes provided agents with possible clues. - A DETROIT Free Press reporter said several persons talked to O'Brien Saturday, and it was also reported that O'Brien was seen Monday, but this could not be confirmed. James Hoffa told a news conference the family and friends put up a $200,000 reward for information revealing the where- abouts "and-or leading to the safe return," of the missing ex- Teamsters president. Federal agents reportedly planned to question former union official Daniel Sullivan in Philadelphia. Sullivan has said Hoffa told him of threats made more than a year ago by Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano. PROVEZANO was in Forida and refused comment. Jay Bailey, the FBI's chief investigator, said the bureau is working under the assumption that Hoffa is alive. "There is no evidence that anything has happened to Mr. Hoffa. He is missing," said Bailey. "We have no information that he is alive, but we have none that he is dead, either. We have no information." HE DID SAY the FBI is working on "some leads," and a AP Photo source said one lead took the bureau to Sullivan. ster, sets out The family says it believes Hoffa was kidnaped, but young of Loch Ness. Hoffa said he thinks his father is alive somewhere. Most union t of luring out sources have speculated that Hoffa probably is dead.
