Not u n t i l Gilliam hit Frank Lewis with a 22-yard touchdown pass with 4:16 left in the game did the Steelers lead in the tightly- played contest. The All-Stars, who haven't won a game since their 1963 counterparts defeated the Green Bay Packers 20-17, broke in front on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Steve Rartkowski of California to Pat McInally of Harvard. THE ALL-STARS protected the lead until only 10:19 remain- ed in the game when Gilliam directed a 42-yard touchdown march, capped by a six-yard scoring pass to Rocky Bleier. The next time the Steelers got the ball, Gilliam guided them 15 yards to another score, cap- ped by his touchdown strike to Lewis. Unable to gain on the ground, the All-Stars maintained com- mand on the deft punting of Neil Clabo of Tennessee. Clabo hit on a deep punt with the score ties 14-14, but it was called back because of illegal motion against the All-Stars. Willie Horton's second home run of the game, a three-run shot, had tied the score with two outs in the top of the ninth, then Bill Freehan's sec- ond of the game had given Detroit a 7-6 lead. But in the bottom of the ninth, Denny Doyle singled to short and continued to second on Gene Michael's wild throw, Carl Yas- trzemski singled Doyle home and moved to second in the throw to the plate. After Fred Lynn was walked intentionally, Jim Rice bunted down the third base line. Pentz, 0-1, fielded the ball but had no play at first. So he tried for an out at third and threw the ball past the base, allowing Yastr- zemski to score. Tribe tripped NEW YORK-Thurman Mun- son knocked in the tie-breaking run in a two-run third inning and Sandy Alomar sent home the winning run with a triple in the sixth last night, leading the New York Yankees to a 5-4 vic- tory over the Cleveland Indians. Catfish Hunter, 14-10, got the victory with relief help from Tippy Martinez and Dick Tidrow. Tidrow was bailed out by a last-out, somersaulting catch by shortstop Fred Stan- ley with the tying run on third. Cards bake CHICAGO - Bake McBride's two-run single in the four-run fifth inning and strong relief pitching by Bob Gibson led the St. Louis Cardinals to a 9-4 vic- tory over the Chicago Cubs yes- terday. McBride opened the game with a bunt single, stole second, continued to third on a throw- ing error and scored as Reggie Smith grounded out. His two-run single in the fifth followed a leadoff double by Ron Fairly and a pair of fielder's choices involving an error, and n run-scoring single by Mike Tyson.
