Saturday, Auguet 2, 197:. THE MICHIGAN DAILY Pone Eleven Saturday, August 2, 1 9L. THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Eleven Sports of the Dail By The Associated Press Nasty clown Michigan tennis star Freddie DeJesus and his partner Peter Fleming, a former Michigan student now enrolled at UCLA, lost 6-3, 7-6 yesterday to Arthur Ashe and Ilie Nastase in a first-round match of the Louisville Pro Tennis Classic. Nastase appeared with dark makeup all over his face, break- ing up the crowd as well as Ashe, who is black. "They make us dress alike," Nastase said, referring to the players' union code for doubles, "so why shouldn't we look alike." The temperamental Romanian came into the clubhouse, shield- ing his face with his jacket. A few minutes later, he emerged from the lockerroom for the first round match, and Ashe began to laugh. Nastase tried and failed on the first point, vainly swinging his racket behind his back at the ball. But he soon settled down clowning only occasionally. Bryant stays in L.A. National Football League commissioner Pete Rozelle has reversed his decision that granted the contract rights of Los Angeles Ram running back Cullen Bryant to the Detroit Lions, in compensation for ex-Lion Ron Jessie who signed as a free agent with the Rams. The Lions will instead receive the 1976 first-round draft choice previously acquired by the Rams from the Green Bay Packers, and such additional compensation in the form of a draft choice, as Rozelle's office may determine appropriate after the conclusion of the 1975 season. Wilt spikes LOS ANGELES-Wilt Chamberlain, the National Basketball Association's all-time leading scorer, ended his athletic retirement yesterday and at the same time became an owner-in volleyball, not basketball. The 7-foot-2 giant, who once averaged more than 5 points per game for an entire NBA season, purchased the Southern California Bangers of the International Volleyball Association, Chamberlain's attorney said. Seymour Goldberg said Chamberlain "will be directly involved and will play" for the Bangers, but probably won't play in all the team's games. "He'll be active, but not on a regular game-by- game basis." Taylor critical DAVENPORT, Iowa-Former Olympic wrestler Chris Taylor was listed in serious condition yesterday in the intensive care unit of Mercy Hospital with what hospital officials described as a deep abscess in the calf of his right leg. Taylor was in town for a professional wrestling show Tuesday night. DeRusha said Taylor's doctor said the abscess may have been caused by a severe blow during a wrestling match July 26 but added there is no way to know for sure. He also suffers from septicemia, a medical term for blood poisoning, but a hospital spokesman said his condition is im- proving.
