Police prepare to sue
city over contract dispute

and if the police have their way,
they would receive a s'x per
cent pay increase retroactive to
July 1, the date their old con-
tract expired and a 4.7 per cent
pay increase retroactive to last
January.
While the city has refused to
conceed to any retroactive bene-
fits, it has agreed to pay boosts
averaging about 20 per cent for
a one-year period beginning this
fiscal year.

Although Murray endorsed the
rejected contract, he made it
clear that the officers' demand
for a 23 per cent average pay
increase was unsatisfactwry to
the city.
THE 23 PER CENT figure
was ratified by a majority of
the 34 command officers who
also demanded a no-layoff pro-
vision in the contract.
However, the layoff issue, a
major reason why Council re-
jected the contract, has yet to
be worked out.
The command officers have
toned down their original de-
mands to an average increase
of $4,000, but the city is limiting
its offer to an average increase
of about $3,000.
