Tuesday, JMy 15, 1975 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Seven TuesayJu' 15,197 TH MICIGA DALY Pge eve City Council debates pros, cons (Continued from Pae 3) if the airport would reach a saturation point within the next ten years. One faction of the citizens' review team stated, "We rec- ommend the Council reiterate its stand not to expand the air- port . . . and communicate to the federal and state agencies port as it now is. This should its intent to maintain the air- be our 'Master Plan'." A differing opinion, but also from the citizens' group, stated, "The city must provide a plan that will foster aviation growth and be responsive to aviation's developing needs." THERE WAS also some de- hate over how much money the air ortcould contribute to its operating costs. Chastain con- tended, "The operating revenues for 1974 exceeded the oper-sing expenses by $41,000 . . . and by 1995 there should be a $66,000 profit margin." But Chastain's profit margin figures came under attack from C'ries, "Theae so-called operaing pr its are close to the break- even point . . - these are very bare breakeven numbers." Chastain emphasized that the airport needed to have a "5,000 foot-long runway for business- type aircraft . . . and it has been established that there is a great deal of interest in the airport from the business com- munity." THE AIRPORT presently only has a 3,500 foot runway. He also pointed out that "5,000 feet is the least amount required by the FAA for precision instru- ment approach." However, Pittsfield Township and some city residents have opposed the 5,000 faot runway ofair port length because of possible high levels of noise. IN OTHER, Council matters, Councilwoman Kathy Kozachen- ko (HRP-Second Ward) was certain at press time that she would not be able to garner even the necessary support to get two of her resolutions onto the floor. One resolution called for "Council to proclaim .its firm support for Joanne Little in her struggle for justice at the hands of the sexist racist classist legal system . . . and likewise sup- port the continuing fight of Inez Garcia and all other victims of our brutal violent racist male culture." Juan Little was arrested in Raleigh, N.C., and accused of murdering her jailer, whs al- legedly attempted to rape her. Inez Garcia was convicted in California of murder after she fatally shot man she accused of raping her. COUNCILWOMAN Carol Jones (D-Second Ward) defended her refusal to give the motions sup- port: "What is happening to Joan Little pisses me off, hut I just can't buy the wording of those resolutions . . . her (Ko- zachenko's) basic point is good -. b ut she puts in all kinds of subjective words and conclu- sions in the motion." The other HRP motion stated that, "The United States govern- ment is waging a campaign of harassment, attack and murder against members and support- ers of the American Indian Movement . . . We demand an end to the American govern- ment's siege of Pine Ridge reservation, and that all U.S. troops, including FBI agents and national guardsmen, with- draw immediately and unilat- erally.
