Hawaiian trek ends in disaster for family

LOS ANGELES (I)-A widow's
dream of a leisurely sail to the
Hawaiian Islands with two of
her sons turned to near tragedy
early yesterday after their boat
collided with a whale and sank.
Nancy Sherman, 44, her sons,
Jim, 18, and Jeff, 15, all of Del
Mar and three others aboard
the 46-foot sloop Atorrante were
rescued 300 miles offshore by
the Swiftsure, a yacht taking
part in the annual Transpac
ocean race.
NONE were injured and the
Swiftsure continued on to Ha-
wai.
The Atorrante radioed a dis-
tress call to the Coast Guard
in San Diego, saying it had col-
lided with a whale. The crew
shot up flares and took to a

life raft.
They were rescued 45 minutes
later. There was no indication
of the whale's condition.
THE FAMILY timed their
voyage, which began from San
Diego July 2, to Honolulu to
coincide with the Transpac race
for safety reasons.
"They all have the cool and
skill and the pluck to get off
the boat and save their lives."

said a family friend, Warren
Cereghino of Los Angeles.
"Nancy's a very level-headed
individual."
Mrs. Sherman's h u s b a n d,
George, a book editor for Walt
Disney Productions, died last
year after a lengthy illness and
she had dreamed of the cruise
for months.
"THE WHOLE trip was
planned for many, many

months," said her son John, 20,
who remained at home. "They
were really looking forward to
it. My sister Kathy was to fly
to Hawaii and join the cruise
there."
Mrs. Sherman bought the
Atorrante, a wooden-hulled sloop,
earlier this year. She, Jim and
Jeff took sailing lessons and
two men they met in class were
asked to join the cruise as crew-
men. Also serving as a crew-

man was Ron Powell of Fort
Lauderdale, Fla., a classmate
of Jim's at Lewis and Clark
College in Portland, Ore.
The collision occurred about
12:36 a.m. PDT yesterday and
the crew fired off the flares.
The Swiftsure, skippered by
Nicholas Frazee, and the Sham-
rock, skippered by Roy Disney
Sr. saw the flares light up the
nighttime sky and went to the
rescue.
