The top-seeded Connors was defeated, 7-5, 6-3, by Roscoe Tanner of Lookout aountain, Tenn., as players struggled to familiarize themselves with grass courts again. Also out of contention after the quar- ter-finals were Guilermo Vilas of Ar- gentina and Arthur Ashe of Richmond, Va., seeded No. 2 and 3 here. Vilas seemed troubled by the grass court and he went down, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, to Australian Phil Dent. Ashe was topled, 6-3, 6-4, by Aus- tralian veteran Tony Roche, who now meets Tanner in Friday's semifinals. McTear to miss AAU meet EUGENE, Ore. - Teen-age sprint sen- sation Houston McTear will not appear in his first Amateur Athletic Union Track and Field Championships this weekend because the AAU refused to send enough money to cover his expenses, McTears high school principal said yesterday. 0 Steeler's sign Greenwood PITTSBURGH - Defensive end L. C. layer's Greenwood signed a multi-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday ending speculation that he might join another football team. Greenwood, a free agent since May I after playing out the option year of his contract with the Steelers, had signed a contract with the Birmingham Ameri- cans of the World Football League. But the Americans failed to fulfill con- tractual obligations and eventually fold- ed. That opened the way for the 6-foot- 6, 245-pound All Pro to return to the World Champion Steelers. Wooden rejects ABA SAN DIEGO - John Wooden says he is definitely not going to coach the San Diego entry in the American Basketball Asociation or any other profesional team.
