Cubs cuffed CINCINNATI - Don Gullett pitched a five-hitter and George Foster hit a two-run homer last gain night, carrying the streaking Cincinnati /Reds to a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Gullett, 7-3, won his third game in a row as the Reds posted their 13th victory in the last 16 games. FOSTER gave him a 2-0 lead in the second inning with his ninth homer of the year, follow- ing Dan Driessen's single off Bill Bonham, 5-5. A single by Pete Rose, the 2,400th hit of his career, Joe Morgan's double and Johnny Bench's sacrifice fly made it 3-0 in the third. Mets mash NEW YORK - Phil Niekro pitched a six-hitter and knocked in a run, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 4-1 victory over the New York Mets last night. New York starter Randy Tate, 2-5, was in trouble right away, first in NL giving up two runs to the Braves in the first inning on Dave May's RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Larvell Blanks.
