Competing last weekend in the six mile, McGuire finished behind John Jones of the Ohio Track Club, who came through with a time of 28:08. McGuire's time in the event was 28:14. By The Associated Press Ramirez wins in Italy ROME-Rail Ramirez won the rain-delayed Italian Open tennis championships yesterday with a hard-fought 7-6, 7-5, 7-5 triumph over Manuel Orantes of Spain. Orantes took a 3-0 lead in the first set, but Ramirez broke back in the seventh game to even it and won the tie-break 7-3. Ramirez broke Orantes in the 12th game of the second set for a 7-5 triumph. In the third, Ramirez jumped to a 3-0 lead. but was tied 3-3 when Orantes battled back. But Ramirez' break, again in the 12th game, gave him the title. ABA names All-Stars NEW YORK-Julius Erving and George McGinnis, who shared the American Basketball Association's most valuable player award for the 1974-75 senson, head the ABA All Star team. Erving, of the New-York Nets, and McGinnis, who played for Indiana last season, were unanimous choices in the balloting of writers and broadcasters in the 10 ABA cities. Completing the first team were center Artis Gilmore of the champion Kentucky Colonels, and guards Mack Calvin of the Denver Nelgeets and Ron Boone of the Utah Stars. McGinnis, whs signed a controversial contract with the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association last Friday, led the ABA in scoring with 29.8 noints per game during the regular season a'-d 32.3 in the playoffs. Erving. named to the All Star team for the third straight year, finished second to McGinnis in scoring and was among the league leaders in five other individlal departments. Gilmore was the MVP of the playoffs and made the first team for the foirth consecutive season. He received 58 of a possible 60 votes.- Calvin, like McGinnis, Erving and Gilmore, was a repeat choice. He led the ABA in assists and free throw percentage. Boone made the first team for the first time in his seven- year career. He was the ABA's third best scorer during the regular season with a 25.2 average and extended his iron-man string to 584 games. He has never missed a game since joining the league. Selected for the second team were forwards George Gervin and Marvin Barnes of St. Louis, center Swen Nater of San Antonio, and guards Brian Taylor of New York and James Silas of San Antonio. Matthews breaks thumb CHICAGO-San Francisco Giants left fielder Gary Matthews was fighting, perhaps playfully, with teammate Derrel Thomas when he broke his left thumb, it was reported yesterday. The injury occurred in Montreal before Sunday's game with the Expos and, in apparent coverup, it was explained that Mat- thews was hurt in a pepper game. Teammates later said there was a "scuffle" on the field during batting practice. Matthews, the team's cleanup hitter, will be out at least six weeks. He was batting .285 with four home runs and 24 runs batted in. Maor League Standings AMERICAN LEAGUE NATIONAL LEAGUE MATLACK BLANKS Expos By The Associated Press MONTREAL-Woodie Fryman stopped Los Angeles on 10 hits and doubled home a run to lead the Montreal Expos past the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-3. Fryman, a 35-year-old left- hander, struck out five batters in raising his record to 5-2. Doug Rau, 5-5, took the loss. The Dodgers built a 2-0 lead against Fryman in the first but the Expos came back to tie it in their half of the inning. Dave Lopes led off the game with a single and moved to second on Tom Paciorek's long flyball to center. Jim Wynn delivered a single to left, scoring Lopes, and ad- vanced to third on Steve Gar- vey's double into the left-field corner. One out later, Fryman wild-pitched Wynn home. to the bottom of the inning. Tim Foli walked, moved to third on a pair of ground otits and scored on a balk by Rau for Montreal's first run. Larry Par- rish blooped a single off second baseman Lopes' glove to drive in the second Montreal run. Larry Lintz' run-scoring sin- gle to center in the third put Montreal on top 3-2. Jorgensen started the Ex- pos' rally in the fourth with a ground-rule double to left and scored when Fryman doubled down the right-field line. Fry- man took third on Pepe Man- gual's single and scored when Rau bobbled Foli's suicide squeez bunt. After Carter walked, Charlie Hough replaced Rau and got the side out. Los Angeles threatened in the sixth but Montreal got out of it with the help of an odd double play. With Joe Ferguson on third and Lee Lacy on second and one out, pinch hitter Ken McMullen bounced back to Fry- man.
