State (near GINO'S) 662-3969 eFtc Try Daily Classifieds (Continued fromPage 1). The settlement, however, took the Board of Education by sur- prise. 'We had no idea when it would be settled," Howard said at yesterday's meeting. The high court ruling will allow the school district to collect approximately $100,000 a year from the University. HOWARD explained that a _.918 millage in 1975-76, when added to the $500,000 from the University, will yield the $1.3 million originally expected from a 1.5 millage increase. "It is tempting for all of us to look at this new source of money as an opportunity to achieve seriously needed re- pairs to our buildings and to meet other needs," Howard said. "I believe, however, that the Board should not plan to use the full 1.5 mills despite our needs. We had determined to manage with 5.5 mills." However, the five-year mill- age increase request on the ballot will not be changed, ac- cording to Howard, but the law does allow the Board to levy fewer mills than the voters approve. T h e superintendent suggested that a citizens com- mittee be organized to inform the public of the reduction. THE BOARD'S qick action seems to refle-t fears that news of the $500.000 windfall would lose votes for Proonsal A-the milloe increase. The unani- moos annroval of Howard's pro- nosal effectively removes a po- tentisl excuse to vote down the tam hike, Three school hoard candidates indicated vesterday that the one-year rollback d o e s not change their onposition to Pro- posal A. "I think that's a step in the right direction," said D. Stephen McCargar, when in- formed of the Board's action. But he added that he woold support the tax hike only if it were lowered to .5 mills. Another candidate, G e o r g e Wright, exnlained his continued opposition to the millage, say- ing, "the $500,000 isn't really that much." But, he added, "I'm quite pleased that it's there." CANDIDATE Maxine Henson also indicated that she still op- poses the increase. Trustee Cecil Warner, who is seeking his third three-year board seat in the June election, said "it would have been dif- ficult for me to support any other approach" to the millage issue. 231 souh sae Theatre Phone 662-6264 Sot -Sun. at 1-3-5-7-9 p.m. Open at 12:45 rues. or 7 & 9 .m. only Open at 6:45 MONDAY is a GUEST NIGHT!
