The family heard of the re-
lease early Sunday, almost im-
mediately after word reached
the Tanzanian capital of Dar Es
Salaam.
"By coincidence, Prof. David
Hamburg of Stanford, who is in
charge of the program, was
talking to Jane Goodall and the
ambassador in Dar Es Salaam
when word first reached the
capital," Mr. Smuts added. "So
Hamburg called us almost im-
mediately."

As to whether Barbara would
remain in Tanzania for any
length of time, Smuts answered,
"I'm sure she'll be home soon
if she can't do anything there."
THOUGH sure that his daugh-
ter "would love to return to
Tanzania," Smuts said that the
research center had been closed
down, and did not know if it
will be reopened.
The three still held in cap-
tivity are Carrie Jane Hunter,
21, of Atherton, Calif.; Kenneth
Smith, 22, of Garden Groe,
Calif.; and Emilie van Berg-
man, 24, of The Netherlands.
Smuts said she left her com-
panions in "good health and in
good spirits," but convinced
that their captors would "not
hesitate to shoot them if the
demands were not met."
