In Chicago, Pullano said he was "shocked" at the rejection and that he had been optimistic of signing Namath right up un- til the time he received a phone call from the star's attorney, Jimmy Walsh, telling him that the offer had been turned down. A spokesman for.Walsh re- leased a single sentence state- ment in New York, disclosing the rejection of one of the most spectacular money of- fers in the history of sports. "After considerable deliber- ation, and with every wish that the WFL prove a successful league, Joe Namath respect- fully declines the offer from the Chicago Winds football team for reasons which are per- sonal and private," the state- ment said.
