LANSING (UPI)-S e n a t e
Democrats have defeated the
first nomination of a student to
a university governing board,
saying the 24-year-old appointee
of Gov. William Milliken would
have abused the position.
After taking a formal caucus
position yesterday, the Demo-
crats outvoted Repuhlicans hy
a 22-11 margin to block the
appointment of Thomas Korpi

IT WAS the first time that a
Milliken appointee has been
blocked by the Senate.
The fight to block Korpi's
nomination was led by Sen.
Joseph Mack, (D - Ironwood),
who said the former samna
student threatened to use his
position to retaliate against the
student newspaper editor for an
April 16 editorial opposing the
nomination.
The vote on Korpi, who lives
in Stambaugh, came after 90
minutes of heated debate and
lengthy closed - door caucuses
by Democrats and Republicans.
KORPI, who testified before
the Senate Business Committee
earlier Thursday, denied that
he had threatened reprisals
against the editor, Stephen
Roth, or that he had resorted
to intimidation.
"That's the thing I hate the
most - intimidation - and
now I'm accused of it," Korpi
said.
After the Senate vote, Korpi
told newsmen that the universi-
ty administration was primar-
ily responsible for blocking his
nomination.
"I think they're people who
are very paranoid," said Korpi,
who watched the confirmation
debate from the Senate Gallery.
