LeFlore singles home winner in tenth, 5-4 By PAUL CAMPBELL Special to the Daily DETROIT-Just when it seemed that last night's Tigers-White Sox game would never end, Ron LeFlore singled to center scoring Lance Parrish and give the Tigers a 5-4 win with two outs in the tenth inning. LeFlore's shot closed the door on a game which had started over three months ago (April 18? when the teams played two scoreless innings before rains forced the end of play. STEVE KEMP opened the tenth by singling to right, and advanced to third when reliever Lewin LaGrow hit Parrish with a pitch and Tim Covan bunted perfectly between the mound and third. But, as the game passed the three hour mark, first Aurelio Rodriquez and then Alan Trammel failed to bring in the winning runs. Rodriquez struck out on a 3-2 pitch and Trammel forced Kemp at home. But LeFlore ripped LaGrow's first pitch up the middle, making a winner out of Bob Sykes (6-5) who pitched four Boston 7, New York 5 NEW YORK (AP)-Rick Burleson and Jim Rice delivered run-scoring singles in the 17th inning last night, giving the Boston Red Sox a 7-5 victory over the New York Yankees in the completion of a game suspended after 14 innings by an American League cur- few one night earlier. Loser Ken Clay, 2-5, retired the first seven Boston batters he faced before Dwight Evans blooped a single to right- center, only the eighth Red Sox' hit, and wne to third when Butch Hobson boun- ced a soft hit-and-run single through the right side. Burleson delivered Evans superb innings and in relief of starter Dave Rozema. The issues seemed resolved in Rozema's favor early in the game, as the Tigers marched to a 4-1 lead behind win-blown homeruns. Into the right field upper deck off the bats of Rusty Staub and Milt May. THE ROSE'S hopes for a birthday victory (he turns 22 on Saturday) were dashed in the seventh when the first four Chisoc stroked base hits to bring the count 4-3. Sykes came in and in- duced pinch hitter Chet Lemmon into hitting a double play grounder. Ralph Garr scored on the play to tie the game. Sykes shut down Chicago almost completely, striking out seven in his four inning stint. The only mistake he made came in the eighth, when he dropped Thad Bosley's bunt and gave up a harmless single to Jorge Orta. The Tigers meanwhile, collected 13 hits and have a good chance of passing Minnesota and becoming the best hit- ting team in the American League. All the starters except Trammel had at least one hit and LeFlore, Kemp, May, Corcoran and Mankowski each had two. with a single and one out later Rice singled home the second run of the in- ning. Bob Stanley, 6-1, the fifth Boston pit- cher, worked three perfect innings, allowing only one hit out of the infield. Cubs 3, Cardinals 2 CHICAGO (AP)-Bill Buckner's tie- breaking single in the seventh inning gave the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 victory over St. Louis yesterday, their 12th vic- tory without a defeat against the Car- dinals this season. The triumph lifted the second-place Cubs to within 31 games of the idle Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East. I faa tLegue Staeiag6 AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST W L Pct.
