The Michigan Daily-Friday, August 4, 1978-Page 7 $2,500 TEAMSTERS CONTRIBUTION QUESTIONED Patterson's funds investigated PONTIAC (UPI) - Oakland County Prosecutor L. Brooks Patterson, a Republican Senate candidate, is under investigation for allegedly failing to report a 1972 campaign contribution from Teamsters leader James Hoffa, the Oakland Press reported yesterday. The newspaper said Police Chief William Hanger confirmed the in- vestigation was under way. But when contacted later yesterday, Hanger would not comment further. PATTERSON TOLD the newspaper he was not aware the contribution, reported to be $2,500, was from Hoffa, who was in prison serving a term for' jury tampering at the time. Hoffa disappeared three years ago. Patterson said the money was less than $500 and was donated to the Republican party, not his own cam- paign. He also said he reported the donation, but the records have since been destroyed, He said the revelation was an attempt to sabotage his Senate campaign. "AFTER FIVE and a half years of being an aggressive prosecutor, they know the only way to get me is by at- tacking me while I'm running for higher office," Patterson said. "I've kept my nose clean and my powder dry, and they know it. The only way they can hurt me is through my candidacy. It's obvious.", Patterson also told UPI that recent prosecutions of persons tied to organized crime probably "were sparking the accusations. "THEY'RE KICKING back," he said. "They're coming out of the wood- work in the last few days, or from under a rock." The newspaper said the money was relayed from Hoffa to Patterson through Louis Linteau, a former Hoffa associate who was recently arrested in Oakland County in a sweep of alleged organized crime figures. Linteau, a campaign that year. limousine service owner, is believed the According to the newspaper, its last person known to have talked to Hof- inouiries about the donation prompted fa. McCabe to tell Hanger of the meeting.
