The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, August 1, 1978--Page 9 Crawford ordered baek to prison MOSCOW (AP) - American businessman Francis Crawford under- went five hours of interrogation yester- day at Lefortovo prison and told repor- ters afterward he felt like "a pawn in a political chess game." Soviet authorities ordered Crawford, 38, to return to the yellow-walled prison barely a month after he was tem- porarily freed in a deal involving release of two alleged Russian spies in the United States. THE MOBILE, Ala., native, an em- ployee of International Harvester Co., said he was told to appear tomorrow morning for more questioning, and in- dicated it probably would continue beyond that. "We've been doing a lot of repeating of old material that was covered in the first few days upon my arrest - nothing new," he said. Soviet officials reportedly have said Crawford is being investigated for alleged currency violations. A convic- tion on those charges could mean three to eight years in prison. "I HAVE nothing to be frightened about," he told Western reporters out- side the prison yesterday. "I have broken no law ... I know inside, my company knows and the embassy knows that I'm not guilty of any violation of any Soviet law." Under Soviet law, persons arrested are not given the right to legal counsel until charges have been formally drawn up against them. Crawford said he asked Soviet of- ficials to let U.S. consular officer Robert Pringle to be present to advise him during the sessions. ASKED ABOUT the atmosphere of the sessions, he said, "It was pleasant. There was no hostility" According to one report, Soviet authorities have claimed Crawford illegally purchased 20,000 Soviet rubles for $8,500. At the current official ex- change rate, that amount of rubles would cost $29,400. "What would you do with 20,000 rubles?" Crawford said. He noted that high-quality shops for foreigners in Moscow require Western currency and that there is little a Westerner would find to buy in regular stores for large amounts of rubles. After his arrest June 12, Crawford was held for more than two weeks at Lefortovo in a 9-by-15-foot cell he shared with a Soviet prisoner. He was interrogated daily. On June 27, Crawford was freed tem- porarily in the recognizance of U.S Ambassador Malcolm Toon. The following builders have received the EEE Award: RIDER CUSTOM HOMES 8955 S.
