The Michigjan Daily-Saturday, May 6, 1978-Page 19 SELDOM USED HURLER BLANKS NOTRE DAME No-hit Owens seeks more By JAMIE TURNER One could be excused if the name Tom Owens doesn't ring any bells while discussing the resurgent Michigan baseball team. IN-THE WAKE of the team's winning streak the heroes have been the other pitchers on the staff such as Steve' Howe, Graig McGinnis and Bill Sten- Cinderman, Hoosiers meet today By ELISA FRYE The men's track team, in preparation for the Big Ten Outdoor Championships to be held May 19-20 in Evanston, will be competing in a dual meet with In- diana in Bloomington today. "We probably won't have any great performances," said assistant coach Ron Warhurst. "We won't break any records, we're just looking for sound competitive performances. In the Big Ten meet we'll be competitive and fast," be added. Although the line-ups will remain basically the same, Warhurst says, "We're kind of switching the personnel around. We're experimenting with three people in the 5000 meters; Mike McGuire, Dave Lewis and (freshman) Bill Weidenbach," said Warhurst. "Weidenbach may be something of a surprise, he's been training well." All-American 5,000-meter specialist Bill Donakowski will not be par- ticipating against the Hoosiers as he will be attending his brother's wedding. T OLKIE N fr-om A to Z Amster nett. Even Steve Perry, who has been- sidelined much of the year and who pAssesses the-highest ERA on the team, got a start last weekend ahead of the seldom-used Owens. But the junior from Grand Blanc made a bid to change all of that with his brilliant no-hitter of Notre Dame Wed- nesday afternoon. Only three batters reached base against the 6-4 righty, and two of those were on errors. "I knew all along that I had a no- but he's had periods of wildness and in- consistency," stated coach Moby Benedict. "We sure hope the fact that he pitched a no-hitter will give him the confidence to be a fine pitcher for us." But Owens believes that he already has confidence. "I THINK I can pitch ... I know that I can pitch," said Owens. "Sometimes I get some opportunities and I don't do so well, but I think I can have success here. "I think I've completely conquered (the control problems)," he continued. "We certainly have a strong staff, and I certainly don't want someone not to do well, but I do want to get in and pitch." The biggest threat to Owens' no-hitter starts was in the seventh inning when with two outs, a Notre Dame batter laid down a bunt. Owens slipped slightly moving off the mound, picked up the ball and fired high and wide to first - pulling first- sacker Bob Wasilewski off the bag in the process. The scoreboard signaled a premature "hit" on the play that was later changed to an error on Owens. "I didn't look at the scoreboard on the play. I didn't know whether it was a hit or an error," stated Owens. But after mowing down the next bat- ter, Owens got the word in the dugout that he had indeed received the no- hitter, an effort which he hopes will get him a few more starts. iom niens hitter going," said Owens. "Nobody was saying anything to me in the dugout except things like 'let's play good defense'." "They knew and I knew (about the game)," he continued. "There's this thing that nobody should say anything about the no-hitter. I remember earlier this season somebody said something and a few innings later a guy got a hit." EXCEPT FOR sophomore Mike Bryant and freshman Kevin Clinton, Owens has pitched fewer innings over his career than any other member of the Michigan staff. As a Wolverine hurler, Owens holds a 5-5 record with a, 4.67 ERA over two and a portion seasons seeing only sparse action this year after having a less than successful spring down in Florida (1-1, 7.56 ERA).
