The Michigan Daily-Saturday, May 6, 1978-Page 13 FBI NAMES THREE ANTI-CASTRO EXILES: Cubans charged in Letelier plot WASHINGTON tAP) - Three anti- Castro Cuban exiles were charged yesterday by the FBI in the plot to kill former Chilean diplomat Orlando Letelier, who died in 1976 when a bomb exploded in his car on a Washington street. The FBI said Ignacio Novo Sampol, 2a na lrli. ln i -7a- ---e --rr a in Newark, N.J., late Thursday. The two other suspects being sought by the FBI are Jose Dionisio Suarez Esquivel, 39, and Virgilio Paz Romero, 26, who are also naturalized U.S. citizens. SUAREZ SPENT a year in jail in Washington on contempt charges for refusing to testify before a grand jury investigating Letelier's death. But he was released last April when the grand jury term expired and FBI officials believe he went to California. Paz was last known to be in the New York area. The FBI last month charged a fourth man, Michael Townley, in the con- spiracy to murder Letelier. Townley, an American who had lived for many years in Chile, is reportedly cooperating with federal prosecutors who have charged he was an agent of Chile's special police. Townley is being held without bail. IN ADDITION, two other Cuban exiles being held on unrelated federal warrants are suspected of involvement in the Letelier case. One of them is Guillermo Novo Sam- pol, a brother of Ignacio Novo Sampol. The sixth man is Alvin Ross Diaz. Ross and Guillermo Novo Sampol were flown to New York by U.S. mar- shals last Friday after their arrest in Miami on April 14. MIAMI FBI agent George Cannon, in a sworn statement filed in federal court Wednesday, said the bomb blast that killed Letelier on Sept. 21, 1976, may have been detonated by an electronic beeper. The statement said such a beeper was found in the glove compar- tment of a gray 1977 Lincoln Continen- tal driven by Diaz. Letelier was foreign minister and ambassador to the United States under Marxist President Salvador Allende, who was killed following a bloody coup Townley's wife, Mariana Callejas de Townley, has told the Washington Post her husband is cooperating fully with U.S. authorities and has named about 10 persons who either ordered or Escaped eriminat caught (Continuedfrom Page3) A WOMAN who accompanied Koester identified herself as his wife, and the car vhich the fugitive was driving was registered in her name. The woman was apparently drunk. A police source described her as "bombed to the gills" and said she had passed out in the car by the time Koester was picked up at the party store. It is unlikely that charges will be pressed against her. Ann Arbor police also picked up another wanted man Thursday night. Charles Redmond, 36, who was sought in Flint on a felony narcotics charge, was spotted by police on the 1100 block of Broadway. He was immediately arrested. Police say that Redmond had a pistol in his possession at the time of the arrest. They will present evidence to the prosecutor's office in order to ob- tain a warrant against Redmond for carrying a concealed weapon. SCHLITZ BREWING CO. MILWAUKEE. WI WHYiSN'T DRAUGHT BEER SPELLED DRAFT BEER? This is one of those unanswerable questions, like, "Which came first, the chicken or the colonel?" However, discussing it can be quite rewarding. So, as your Dean of Beer, I suggest you gather a group of fellow scholars and ponder the question over a significant sample of draught Schlitz. (Or is it draft?) This procedure is known, in layman's terms, as a "Beer Party:" This will undoubtedly raise a question for further study: Why does it taste so good?
