Page 16--Friday, July 21, 1978-The Michigan Daily BASEBALL ROUNDUP Cubs, Giants call it a dark day Giants 9, Cubs 8 CHICAGO (AP) - Jack Clark, who earlier hit a two-run homer, drilled a tie-breaking single in the eighth inning yesterday, giving the San Francisco Giants a 9-8 lead over the Chicago Cubs in a game that was suspended in the top of the eighth because of darkness. The contest was delayed by rain three times before the umpires called it because of darkness at Wrigley Field. The Cubs took a 5-0 lead in the first two innings on the speed and daring of Rodney Scott and Jerry White, and a two-run double by Bill Buckner. The Giants scored twice in the third on a single by Terry Whitfield and Clark's 17th homer. Trailing 6-2 going into the fifth, the Giants scored six runs as John Tanargo led off with a single and Bill Madlock followed with a double. Whitfield beat out a single, scoring Tanargo, and Clark walked, filling the bases. Pirates 7, Dodgers 6 PITTSBURGH (AP) - Frank Taveras' 10th-inning single and a game- ending throwing error by relief pitcher Terry Forster gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers last night. Ed Ott opened the Pirate 10th with an infield single and was forced by Phil Garner. Winning reliever Bruce Kison, 2-2, then chopped a single over the head of third baseman Lee Lacy, moving Garner to second. Taveras then bopnced a single over the head of Forster. The Dodger left- hander got a glove on the ball, but a wild throw allowed Garner to score the winning run. The Dodgers scored three times in the first inning off Pittsburgh starter Bert Blylevon, with the aid of two Pirate errors on a single play. Willie Stargell, who doubled and scored a run in the second inning, had a two-run double to lead a five-run Pirate surge in the fourth, giving Pittsburgh a 6-4 lead. Mets 7-5, Astros 4-4 Willie McCovey drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Larry Herndon singled in a run and Roger Metzger drew a bases- loaded walk, forcing in another run before Mike Ivie's RBI pinch single. The Cubs scored once in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Larry Biittner, a walk and a pinch single by Mike Vail. Chicago tied it in the seventh on a pinch walk to Ivan DeJesus, a pinch single by Larry Cox and another pinch single by Gene Clines. PIRATESi The Dodgers, trailing 6-5 into the nin- th inning, tied the score on a bases- loaded sacrifice by Reggie Smith. With one out in the Los Angeles ninth, Lacy singled off reliever Ed Whitson and took third on a single by Davey Lopes, who stole second. Bill North drew a walk, and Smith rapped his game-tying sacrifice fly off Grant Jackson. Kison then got Ron Cey out to end the inning. NEW YORK (AP) - Pinch-hitter Joel Youngblood doubled home Willie Montanez from first base in the 11th in- ning yesterday as the New York Mets defeated the Houston Astros 5-4 to record their first doubleheader sweep of the season. John Stearns drove in four runs with a bunt single and a three-run double to lead the Mets to a 7-4 win in the first game. In the nightcap, Montanez singled to right in the 11th inning. Youngblood then doubled into the left field corner to nail down the victory for reliever Dale Murray, 5-4, the third Mets pitcher. Joe Sambito, 3-5, who pitched the last 11/s innings, was the loser. The Mets tied the game in the eighth inning after two were out on con- secutive singles by Tim Foli, Lee Maz- zilli and Montanez. Cardinals 3, Padres 2 ST. LOUIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Tony Scott and George Hendrick drilled run- scoring singles in the seventh inning yesterday, lifting St. Louis to a 3-2 triumph over the San Diego Padres and snapping a four-game Cardinal losing streak. The RBI hits by Scott and Hendrick came off Padre reliever Rollie Fingers, 4-11, and wiped out a 2-1 lead San Diego had taken in the top of the inning. A one-out single by Garry Templeton ignited the Cardinals' rally. Jerry Humphrey drew a walk and Scott laced his hit to right field, scoring Templeton. Hendrick then singled to left, bringing home Mumphrey. St. Louis took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Mike Tyson doubled, advanced to third on Bob Forsch's sacrifice and scored on Mumphrey's sacrifice fly. Gene Tenace walked, Fernando Gon- zales singled and Tucker Ashford doubled to score the tying run for San New York scored twice in the fourth on RBI doubles by Bruce Boisciair and Doug Flynn, and once in the sixth on pinch-hitter Ed Kranepool's groundout. In the opener, the Mets victimized Astros' left-hander Floyd Bannister, 3- 6, for all of their runs in the first two in- nings. The big blow in the first was Montanez's two-run homer, his 13th of the year. Stearns slammed a three-run double in the second.
