Lopez trails
by a stroke
in U.S. Open
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Defending
champion Hollis Stacy birdied the last
two holes for a 1-under-par 70 and a 1-
stroke lead over rookie sensation Nan-
cy Lopez early in yesterday's first
round of the U.S. Women's Open Golf
Championship.
The bubbly, bouncy Stacy dropped an
18-foot putt on the last hole to tie ob-
scure rookie pro Vicki Fergon for the
top spot with well over half the inter-
national field of 153 still out in hot,
humid, hazy weather.
"I'm relieved to get that first round
out of the way and get in with a good
E score,"Stacysaid.
Fergon, like Lopez finishing her
rookie season An this International
Championship, has missed the cut in 11
of 19 starts this year and has won only
$5,300. She rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt
on the 18th hole to take a share of the

Lopez toured the hilly, 6,115-yard
Country Club of Indianapolis Course in

"That's a good score for the first
day," said the 21-year-old Nancy,
whose sparkling personality and un-
matched accomplishments have caught
the fancy of golfing America.
"Now I can improve. If you shoot a
really low score in the first round it's
hard to improve and it affects you men-
tally."
Lopez, winner of seven titles and a
record five in a row and holder of the
rookie money-winning record, was tied

"I will stay with the same game
plan," said fergon. "I just feel I can get
into too much trouble if I pull the driver
out, I can hit it in too many places. I'd
rather hita 3-wood and have an iron to
the green than be in the trees. I'll do the
same thing tomorrow and every other
day on this course."
She said the low round should help
her confidence.
"I've got the feeling I'm in contention
and as I make more holes, I'm getting
more confidence. I'm learning how to,
